Meet the HCUPRM Newbies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

Daysha Pinto

Age: 25

Major: Master of Arts in English Education

Academic year: 5th semester

What Daysha has published so far: 5 Things I’d Wish I’d Known About Grad School Before Applying

Why did you join HCUPRM? I joined HCUPRM because it provides young women and men with a platform to express their ideas, thoughts, and concerns regarding situations we encounter every day in our society. It also provides a community-building space where people from all ways of life can come together, get to know one another, and share their experiences.

What are your interests? I love playing video games and learning about skincare and make-up. I enjoy breaking away from gender stereotypes; video games are usually not considered a “female” activity, and I’ve found that men are particularly surprised when they learn that I’m an avid gamer. I also enjoy cooking for my friends and family, as it allows me to express my creativity through food.

What are your professional goals? Eventually, I envision myself acquiring a PhD in the teaching of writing and a certification in Gender Studies. As an UPRM instructor, I’ve come to learn so much through teaching first-year students. Writing provides an outlet through which students can learn to use, polish, and master their voices. I believe that our academic curriculum doesn’t provide enough instances for students to learn about themselves and their interests, so teaching Intermediate English allows me to provide that opportunity for them.

Daysha also shares a birthday with Metallica frontman, James Hetfield, and Martha Stewart. “It pretty much describes me perfectly. I’m a little domestic, a little rock-and-roll.”

Ashlene Lilliette Lebron Rodriguez

Age: 21

Major: English Literature

Academic year: 5th (and final!) year

What Ashlene has published so far: Ashlene is currently working on material for her Campus, but she has written two posts for the UPRM English Department Blog: Breakfast of Champions and 2016 Graduates: Where Are They Headed?

Why did you join HCUPRM? I decided to join Her Campus because it has a blend of everything and it caters to every audience. Whether it be campus events, profiles of unique people within the campus, to shows we love, to tips on how to survive.

What are your professional goals? I want to become an intellectual property lawyer. It has to deal with copyright, plagiarism, trademarks, among other things. Being able to help other protect their writing and ideas from the rest of the world and for them to earn the credit they deserve. One spends so much energy in what they love/created and I want to protect them from envious people.

Ashlene has been dyeing her hair since she was six or seven years old; her mother is a cosmetologist and she was her ever-willing daughter. She’s also been a vegetarian for the last two months!

Ana Carolina Marrero

Age: 20

Major: English Literature

Academic year: Third year

What you’ve published so far: Ana was recently the photographer for our coverage of Arte en la Placita.

Why did you join HCUPRM? I joined because Her Campus gives me the tools and the experience to work on journalism on the future. It also grants me the opportunity to publish and gets my voice to be heard

What are your interests? Music, reading, writing, Edgar Allan Poe

What are your professional goals? I want to become a professor someday, or if not an editor for a big publishing house

Ana is a Disney junkie: part time princess, full time fangirl.

Danieli Marie Mercado Ramos

Age: 18

Major: Psychology

Academic year: First year

Why did you join HCUPRM? I joined HCUPRM for personal growth, and since its my first year in college I wanted to be a part of something important and that would get me to meet even more people. I joined the PR team because I’m interested in learning acquiring skills in marketing and everything PR-related because my dream is to open my own store and start a company.

What has the PR team been planning lately?  For now, we’ve mostly talked about our birthday bash, and I’ve just given ideas and examples for decorations!

What are your interests? I like to sing and to perform crafts such as sewing, DIYs, embroidery, among others; and I love to read!

What are your professional goals? To own my own store, publish a book one day and become a clinical psychologist.

Danieli is obsessed with bunnies and Mamma Mia!

Keysalis Joan Fermín Pacheco

Age: 22

Academic year: 5th year

Major: English major (Linguistics), Teacher certification, and a minor in Writing and Communication.

What Keysalis has published so far:  My first published piece was Habemus Quorum: The 2016 Student Council, an event coverage of this year’s student council swearing-in ceremony.

Why did you decide to joing HCUPRM? I decided to join HCUPRM because aside from wanting to collaborate with a professional group where I could strengthen my writing skills, it is the only organization where you get to experience campus events others might not have access to. It’s like having an all-access pass into everything that goes on in our University while having the responsibility to inform and entertain our community. It’s also pretty exciting to be part of the creative process of a magazine and having that “so this is how they do it” moment; it’s a constant learning experience.

What are your interests? I am interested too many things but the interests I pursue are writing, music, and education. Writing and music are my passions. I use both to grow personally and professionally and to express myself creatively. I pursue education as a career because I feel responsible for helping to build a better society for tomorrow and I feel the best way to do it is through education and constant growth.

What are your professional goals? Professionally I want to be able to create better learning environments in our communities and make sure everyone has equal opportunities and resources to achieve their dreams. If I can accomplish that, I will consider myself successful.

Keysalis has one of those laughs that end up being funnier than the joke.
