Lola Rodríguez de Tió’s 174th Birthday Bash

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

A September soul, the poet and revolutionary Lola Rodríguez de Tió would be 174 years old on September 14th. She in San Germán, one of the two oldest towns of Puerto Rico. This year, her birthday, life, and legacy shall not go by unnoticed. A collaboration between Juventud Hostosiana and the Cultural Institute of San Germán brought forth a three-day celebration of Rodríguez de Tió. It will begin on Wednesday, September 13th and end on the Friday the 15th. It will take place in Lola’s hometown, San Germán, in the Santo Domingo square right by the Porta Coeli church-museum.

The celebration will be fully dedicated to Lola, her legacy and the revolutionary seeds she planted during her lifetime: she wrote the revolutionary national anthem of Puerto Rico that most colegiales sing during nightly tertulias or social gatherings. Among the scheduled activities, there will be a wreath placed on Lola’s bust, in the town square, a special planting of the “Tree of Freedom,” artistic participations, presentations of Lola’s life and legacy, art exhibitions, and tours of the Aurelio Tió Museum and the Museum of History of San Germán.

The event organizers will be selling T-shirts to raise funds for the Culture Institute of San Germán. Some artists that will make an appearance include Madera Ilegal, Avant Performing Arts Studio, among other artisans, painters, and poets, including Camil “Grito de Libertá,” who will be reciting Lola’s “Rayo de Luna.”
