The University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez is well known for its accomplishments in the fields of science and engineering. However, while on the surface it may not seem like it, there’s definitely a wide variety of young artists slowly coming up and showing their voice in a variety of ways. One of the latest to do so is geology student, Karla Heloise who, other than doing laboratory research, spends a vast amount of time working on her drawing and writing skills. Finally, after years of hard work, she finally had the confidence and aid to make her first shirts that display her work.

The young artist, who has participated in open mic events held by, Vox Populi: Puerto Rico and modeled for young photographer Raúl Irizarry, has always wanted to share her work through clothing and after years of looking for a trustworthy collaborator in Screen Printing & Embroidery, she finally did. While the first design, the Yellow Submarine influenced “The Moon and the Sun,” features what seems to be two faces representing the aforementioned stars interacting with one another, the artist has other pieces to display for future projects some of which explore the use of colors and psychedelic influences.

While Heloise is relatively new to the art scene in the west, as far as showing her work goes, she’s a brave talent who’s willing to explore new mediums. The young geology student has explored the fields of drawing, painting, writing, modeling and now clothing. However, she does wish to play around with music in the future and if history has shown us something about the young artist, is that she’s not afraid to try other fields to express herself.
