The Academy Awards—or as they’re colloquially called, the Oscars—are considered the be-all and end-all of film awards. This year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be celebrating their 91st ceremony. And amidst controversy surrounding then-announced host Kevin Hart’s homophobic tweets resurfacing, the ceremony is set to go host-less for the first time in three decades, promising a one-of-a-kind show.

The film awards season has been a piping hot one, with movies such as The Favourite, A Star Is Born, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, BlacKkKlansman, and Roma leading the winning teams. Actress Glenn Close in her leading role in The Wife has been riding the narrative of the golden star finally receiving the recognition she has earned, while dark horse Lady Gaga in her leading role in Bradley Cooper’s 2018 version of A Star Is Born is hot on her tail, dominating Best Original Song categories for “Shallow” and a few awards for Best Actress as well.
Bohemian Rhapsody polarized a few after winning Best Film – Drama at the Golden Globes this year, while main star Rami Malek went home with the Best Actor – Drama, so it is to be expected (for better or for worse, some might say) that the movie will be a front runner at the Academy Awards. Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma has taken the world by storm and offers an honest showcase of Mexican culture, an appreciation that is deemed important given the horrific targeting that the Mexican community has faced in recent years.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite has quietly, but persistently, ran in the background. With its unconventional portrayal of Queen Anne and a starring role for Academy Award winner Emma Stone, it can’t be counted out of the race as the ceremony approaches.
