Harry and Meghan: A Celebration of Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

The recent news of the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has made everyone jump with joy. The couple announced their nuptial plans on November, 27th, and took the world by storm with their surprise.  The engagement was not only celebrated due to Prince Harry finding love, but also for whom he’s marrying, and how groundbreaking the nuptial decision is. Meghan Markle, a 36-year-old biracial American actress. However, considering we’re in the 21st century, this should not be a big issue, but when acknowledging the influential family she is now going to be a part of, it truly is a big deal.

This engagement shows how modernized the monarchy has become when considering royal marriages. Markle is about to begin her journey to become the first biracial member of the Royal Family, making her marriage to Prince Harry groundbreaking. Markle, career wise, is quite inspirational. When she was eleven years old, the actress wrote a letter to Hillary Clinton denouncing an ad which showed female stereotypes, specifically the jobs women were accustomed to having in society. The point of mentioning this is to acknowledge Markle’s passion, making her an extraordinary addition to the Royal Family.

The union is also very special considering how His Royal Highness honored his mother in the process. The ring, designed by the Prince himself, is yellow gold, with a big diamond in the center, surrounded by small diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal jewelry collection. Prince Harry’s gesture to include his mother’s legacy is amazing and touching. Prince Harry mentions, in an immediate interview after the engagement, that he imagines his mother to be “over the moon” with the news, and that she and Markle would have been the best of friends. The notion of His Royal Highness honoring his mother by including her in his celebration, and marrying a woman of similar morals and values, is something very magical that the world would only think of celebrating.

The couple recalls one of the things which attracted them to one another was the love they both felt for their respective causes and the passion for helping society in general. Markle is a philanthropist, working on several causes like women’s rights and the Clear Water Campaign. Prince Harry is involved in several causes as well, like equal welfare, orphanages, and The Invictus Games, which are a series of sports events composed of servicemen and veterans, specifically those who are wounded or sick. The couple’s dedication to causes and charities is inspiring, and has made the world anxious to see the plans this duo will put into action to impact the world in a positive way.

We may say that this royal announcement is one for the books, due to very special reasons. The world is constantly changing, and while negative things are evidently happening it’s nice to see how two people truly cherish and value each other for their personalities and ways of seeing the world. Having such an influential man marry an equally amazing, talented and passionate woman, without any sort of restraints, is beautiful and heartwarming. Love always finds a way, and in this case, it most certainly did.
