The Agricultural Sciences Faculty of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez invites you to join them in the first-and-only educational agricultural fair in Puerto Rico. As an UPRM tradition the 37th edition of Cinco Días con Nuestra Tierra will be having a variety of exhibitions, workshops, local cuisine, live music and even a butterfly farm during five days of this week. The event, completely organized by the faculty’s students, will open its session Tuesday, March 11 lasting until Saturday, March 15.

As this is a completely student organized activity, the fair is divided into eight committees: Parade, Forums and Workshops, Kiosks, Artisans, Logistic, Horticulture, TMAC and Animal Science. The Her Campus UPRM team approached the committees’ directors and they gave us (and the reader as well) a little preview of what to find in the fair.

Beginning on Tuesday during the campus universal hour, Cinco Días will be having the traditional parade around campus. The parade organizers, Natalia and Adriana Rivera said that this year the parade will extend their route, passing right in front of the Puerto Rico Brewery.

If you’re looking to learn more on educational workshops on compost, grafting, hydroponic farming, among others: you’ll have to join Forums and Workshops director, Edmalie Echevarría, on her wide range of educational workshops.

Now, if your interest is learning from the different local plants, flowers and fruit trees: director Nathaniel Rivera extends you a big welcome inside the Horticulture section. Nathaniel Rivera told HCUPRM this year the exhibition will count with a garden (made by students) placed where the motor of a car would typically be and a traditional food stand in front of the section.

For those interested in learning about the mechanical aspect of agriculture, the TMAC director, Ileane Rodríguez, invites you pass by their section. In here you’ll find all kinds of agricultural technology used in fields; this year the exhibition will have more modern machinery, hydroponic systems, motor force and a special NRCS exhibition.

One of the most-acclaimed parts of the fair is the Animal Science section; director Fabiola Cruz asks you to join the carpa de inpe to learn more about the local production animals; the variety extends from cattle to fish. Fabiola Cruz said to HCUPRM, this year visitors will find new exhibitions as quails, tilapias and pigeons.

If you look to know about local artisans, director Carol Acevedo welcomes the visitors to the Artisans and Craft section in which local crafts, paintings and even jewelry are available for exhibit and sale.

HCUPRM congratulates Cinco Días for their outstanding job and commitment organizing this far-reaching educational event. Be sure to stop by all of the different tents this next five days to learn and promote the agricultural products of our island.
