At the student’s assembly, celebrated on February 11th 2016, colegiales voted in favor of a 48 hours strike, in order to raise their voice against the budget cuts that threaten the proper function of our university to its fullest capacities. The conditions to validate the strike deployed Dr. Uroyoán Walker, current University of Puerto Rico’s (UPR) President, to make sure Hacienda pays UPR back its consignment, unfreeze the assets, and, afterwards, resign his position as president. The deadline was set for today, Tuesday, February 16th, and since none of the students’ conditions were met, the strike is a fact.

M7M (“Movimiento 7 de Mayo”) is the main student’s movement responsible for this prompt mobilization. Earlier today, they led a manifestation that took over MuSA, where the Academic Senate was meeting with Dr. Walker in regard of the students’ demands at the assembly. “If the current conditions persist, if none of the requirements are complied as requested, the 48 hour ‘paro’ at UPRM will be enforced,” said Kiria Hurtado, speaker on behalf of M7M. The strike will extend from Wednesday, February 17th to Thursday, February 18th.
