Educating and Promoting Puerto Rico’s Coffee Industry: “Café Campo”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

The lobby of the Jesús T. Piñero building at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez couldn’t hold any more excitement than it did during the morning of Thursday, November 20th.  This was when the Agricultural Sciences Student Council, led by Agribusiness student –Oscar Hernández, welcomed the UPRM student body to their first ever coffee educational fest, “Café Campo”.

The significant inauguration took place at universal hour (10:30am) and was attended by a numerous quantity of students from diverse majors. This was what Oscar Hernández wanted precisely to do with this event; “I want to show the UPRM community that Piñero is more than just ‘batateros’”, expressed Hernández when sitting down with HCUPRM.

“Café Campo” consisted in an educational approach to the Puerto Rican coffee industry in which students could have the opportunity to enjoy savory types of coffee from different plantations from the island. It also counted with a conference by coffee taster Miguel Monroig and a presentation by renamed barista, Erika Fernández.

The UPRM community and its extension was more than pleased with this great initiative. But, it is clear that this event could not have been possible without the hard work and long hours of commitment of the Agricultural Sciences Student Council and its three main organizers: Oscar Hernández, Mónica Ruiz and Charluz Arocho.
