La Placita de Chardon is renowned for two things: mafuteo and artistic exchange. Enticing, right? If you’ve frequented the placita, you know what’s up and probably aren’t a stranger to Colegio’s own “Arte en la Placita” which will be happening TOMORROW, December 3! If you’ve only heard whispered rumors of this gathering, allow me to break it down for you. Arte en la Placita is an opportunity to let loose and be yourself, or explore a part of yourself that you don’t even know exists. Many of us come into college with an analytical, left-brained perspective suitable for the (inevitably corrupt) scholastic system – or at least, we try to. Consider Arte en la Placita as an escape from the dreary greys of conformism. It engages the bold, the ballistic and brave: open mic, live music and theater, creative cuisine, artisanal crafts, henna tattoos, dreads, trinkets, photography, and an overall good time!

If you’re more of a wallflower than you are a butterfly, no problem! The sidelines will welcome you in with genuine human kindness. I was once an awkward freshman with a suppressed passion for written word; la placita took me in and nurtured my dreams. Three years later and I’ve yet to meet a more versatile, welcoming community anywhere else on campus! The environment is mellow to anyone who passes by, outspoken or shy. For many students, Arte en la Placita is one of the most exciting and worth-while times at el Colegio. I’m sure you’ll find your flavor of company here, too, especially considering the constant stream of Campus Cutie sightings (*wink*).

Our own Campus Celebrity, Lenis Mariana, coordinates the event, so if you wanna put yourself out there, she’s the girl to see. TeatRUM is also on board, so you know you’re in for a laugh. And ladies, if you’re wondering, those funky pom pom and quartz earings you keep seeing around are sold at the event. Even if you can’t splurge, pretty much anyone is up for fair trueque. Still not convinced? Check out their page for more information and photos from previous events (thanks Hemphillian!).
