‘AHS: Apocalypse’ Episode 5 Review: Boy Wonder

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

AHS: Apocalypse continues to pick up steam with its latest episode titled Boy Wonder. Opening with Cordelia Goode (the Foxx is no more) having a vision of a disastrous future, the episode followed the Supreme as she took measures necessary for the coven’s survival. Continuing its predecessors’ theme, the episode offered fantastical showcases of magic that, while I stand by Coven’s magical realism, I must admit that they are breathtaking.

One of the highlights of the episode came with the return of a certain beloved witch that had met a heartbreaking end in her original season. Although the future for the witches is looking grim as the warlocks rise to the top of the hierarchy, this episode proved that they won’t go down without a fight. Additionally, Cordelia’s interaction with Grand Chancellor Ariel gave reason for the witches’ disdain towards the warlocks, something I felt that was missing in the previous episode.

I’m interested to see how exactly the show handles the rest of the season. Given what was presented in the first episodes, we know that the apocalypse does happen, so I’m not quite sure what we’re supposed to take from the initiatives being taken by the coven to ensure their safety. These past two episodes have been predominantly presented through flashbacks, so the show has quite literally put its own original plot on pause.

The season is definitely enjoyable, and each episode further confirms that there’s a lot to explore in Coven’s universe. I think it would have benefited from being solely a crossover, since the first three episodes are completely irrelevant to what is happening now; I hope that the storylines presented in those episodes are addressed and resolved in episodes to come.
