As the semester comes to a close and the stress is winding down, we might find ourselves bored or even trying to avoid dreadful conversations at parties with family members or strangers. Even if you are going on a trip this winter, a book is always a good idea. A friend to keep us company and save us from those awkward conversations. If you enjoy reading, here are some suggestions for you.
1. Looking for Alaska, John Green
A heartbreakingly beautiful novel. It follows Miles “Pudge” Halter’s life after he moves to a boarding school in Alabama. This novel is about love, friendship, and most prominently, loss. It’s only 221 pages long, but it will break you.
2. The Giver, Lois Lowry
This novel is set in a dystopian future where people have no feelings, everyone is appointed to a family, and they start training for their jobs at the age of twelve. It follows the life of Jonah, who is chosen to safeguard the memories of the community, but when he starts to learn how the world once was, he chooses a different path. If you enjoyed The Hunger Games, you will surely enjoy this novel.
3. I’ll Give You the Sun, Jandy Nelson
This novel follows the story of fraternal twins, Noah and Jude, that no longer speak to each other after a traumatic event. After their mother announces she is divorcing their dad, she dies in a car accident, and the twins are forced to cope with her loss in their own separate way. This story is about love, loss, and betrayal. If you enjoy John Green’s work you will really enjoy this novel.
4. Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell
This coming of age story follows Cath and her twin sister Wren, who hang on to a series of books to cope with their mother leaving. After they both go off to college, Cath has to find herself and get through college without her sister’s company  and striving to have as little human contact as possible to be able to finish her fan-fic book before the actual book comes out. This story about family and love. It will get you hooked until you’re done.
