The 17 Best Love Songs for Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, we are all looking for the perfect song that expresses how we feel. Whether you have a SO or you’ll be spending this obnoxious day feeling nauseous with all the PDA happening around you, here are some of the best love songs for all types of love, not just the romantic kind.

1. “Faithfully,” Journey

This classic tells the story of a musician  away from his loved one, how difficult it is to be apart from her and  if she were to stick with him, he’ll be hers forever.  Though it isn’t that relatable, this song is a beautiful piece and one of my personal favorites of all time.

2. “Love Story,” Taylor Swift

Unlike most of Taylor’s songs, this is about the classic fairy tale, a love story like Romeo and Juliet without their deaths.

3. “This Town,” Niall Horan

Niall’s first solo single is all about regrets and the things we keep quiet that we should’ve said. Also, it tells of how some of us still feel butterflies when we see that person we should no longer have feelings for.

4. “Hello,” Lionel Richie

This classic song is about dreaming about being with someone, trying to figure out how we can win that person’s heart, which is something most of us can relate to.

5. “If You Say So,” Lea Michele

This heartbreaking song is about losing the love of your life and how truly sad it is to be unable  to live a future life with the one you thought would be beside you.  This song was performed by Lea Michele, and was dedicated to her late boyfriend, Cory Monteith, who passed away on July 13, 2013, just weeks before their wedding.

6. “Who Says,” Selena Gomez

Because self-love is the most important love of all, this song is about loving and embracing who you are, and not doubting it because of other people.

7. “One and the Same,” Demi Lovato & Selena Gomez

“One and the Same” is about that friend you have with whom you share everything. Although you are different and never thought you guys would have such a strong bond, you’re always there for each other.

8. “For Good,” Wicked OBC

“For Good” is all about that friendship that changed your life and made you a better person. Written by Stephen Schwartz and originally performed by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, this song is about that special bond formed from an unlikely friendship.

9. “Kiss Me,” Sixpence None the Richer

All 90’s girls rememeber this mixtape staple, but its gone down in history as the She’s All That theme song. Swoon!

10. “The Only Exception,” Paramore

A song about putting yourself on the line for somebody even if you don’t really believe in love–but they’ve got you on your way to believing.

11. “Halo,” Beyoncé

A modern classic that needs no introduction. Sample lyrics: “It’s like I’ve been awakened Every rule I had you break it It’s the risk that I’m taking I ain’t never gonna shut you out”

12. “Make You Feel My Love,”  Adele

Adele put her own spin on this song, originally written and recorded by Bob Dylan, in her debut album 19. It’s claimed new life in her catalog and has become a staple of her live performances.

13. “God Only Knows,” The Beach Boys

The quintessential wedding song. Sample lyric:

“If you should ever leave me Though life would still go on believe me The world could show nothing to me So what good would living do me

God only knows what I’d be without you”

14. “I’ll Be There,” The Jackson 5

How can you get more classic than this?

15. “Yellow,” Coldplay

16. “Thinking Out Loud,” Ed Sheeran

The song that turned Sheeran into a household name (and made its way into enchule Spotify playlists everywhere).

17. “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” The Beatles

A happy, effervescent, and simply romantic song that transcends generations. What can be purer than the urge to hold you crush’s hand?
