Colorful jewelry is the way to go and these are as bright and bubbly as they get. These handmade earrings are simply amazing and have so much character. They’re the outfit highlight you need in your life. I had the chance to interview the lovely student who creates these designs. Media Naranja creator, Itza Hernández, has a lot to say!

HCUPR: When did you start making the earrings?
¿Cuándo comenzaste a hacer las pantallas?
MN: I officially started Media Naranja a couple of months ago, in April of this year; although I had been pondering on this idea for over a year. I have always been passionate about creating, but throughout most of my life, my creations only stayed within the family and friends. I would make accessories for my mom, my sister, and myself ever since I was in 7th grade. I would always get questions about my accessories, so I knew I wanted to share my handmade items with everyone at some point in my life.
Oficialmente comencé Media Naranja hace unos meses, en abril de este año, aunque había estado debatiendo la idea por más de un año. Siempre he sido apasionada por crear cosas pero a través de mi vida mis creaciones solo se han quedado dentro de mi familia y mis amistades: hacía accesorios para mi mama, mi hermano, y para mi desde que estaba en séptimo grado. Siempre me preguntaban por los accesorios por eso sabía que quería compartir mis creaciones con todo el mundo en mi vida.
HCUPR: Where do you get your design inspiration from?
¿De dónde surge tu inspiración?
MN: Mostly from my surroundings! I am constantly on the lookout for different color combinations and patterns all around me. Anything can be a source of inspiration: from the clothes I see people wearing to the food I eat. I especially use nature as my muse. I love going to the beach and taking walks in nature, so I am always taking pictures of elements and views that inspire me.
La mayoría de mi inspiración viene de mis alrededores. Estoy constantemente pendiente a diferentes combinaciones de colores y patrones. Cualquier cosa que vea: desde la ropa que veo a las personas usando hasta la comida que como. En especial uso la naturaleza como mi musa. Amo ir a la playa y caminar en la naturaleza. Me paso tomando fotos de los elementos y las vistas que me inspiran.
HCUPR: What do you make them out of? How long does it take to make each pair?
¿De qué haces las pantallas? ¿Cuánto tiempo te toma hacer cada par?
MN: I make them out of polymer clay. Ever since I tried it for the first time in middle school, I fell in love with the medium. There is something just so therapeutic about kneading the clay. The process itself is a bit lengthy since it consists of several steps all done by hand. After kneading and shaping each piece, I bake them and let them cool. Then I attach the earring posts and proceed to paint each piece. This step is the one that takes the longest since I work my designs in layers and I have to wait for everything to dry in between. Depending on the design, I do from three to five layers of paint in different colors and patterns. Finally, I seal everything in with a glaze and assemble each piece. Even though each batch takes about three days to complete, I enjoy the process from start to finish.
Hago mis pantallas arcilla polimérica. La primera vez que use el medio fue en la escuela intermedia y desde ese momento es mi medio favorito. Hay algo muy terapéutico de amasar la arcilla. El proceso en si es un poco largo ya que consiste en varios pasos—todos a mano. Luego de amasar y darle forma a la arcilla, la horneo y luego dejó que se enfrié. Cuando este frio, le pongo el poste del pendiente y pinto el diseño. Este es el paso que más tiempo me toma porque trabajo mis diseños en capas y tengo que esperar que cada capa se seque antes de trabajar la próxima. Dependiendo del diseño hago de 3 a 5 capas de distintos colores y patrones. Lo ultimo que hago es sellar todas las piezas con un barniz y monto la pieza. Aunque cada lote tarda unos tres días en completarse, disfruto el proceso de principio a fin.
HCUPR: What’s your creative process like? Do you do anything in specific to get into the creation vibe?
¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? ¿Haces algo específico para tener un buen ambiente de la creación?
MN: Since I take pictures and keep a list of what I want to make, I usually revisit them before sitting down to create. I have recently gotten a lot of requests and recommendations from clients, which I also take into consideration. Playing around with the clay helps me get my mojo going as well.
Como tomo fotos y mantengo una lista de todas las piezas que quiero hacer, generalmente las reviso antes de sentarme a crear. Recientemente he recibido muchas solicitudes y recomendaciones de clientes, que también tengo en cuenta. Jugar con la arcilla también me ayuda a poner en marcha mi mojo.

MN: You can find me on both Instagram and Facebook @medianaranjajewelry. You can also spot me at the Mercado Colegial held once a month at UPRM at La Placita de Chardón. My sister also helps me out by selling at UPRRP in the halls of Humanidades. I study in Mayaguez and she studies in Río Piedras so we try to cover both bases.

HCUPR: What’s your price range? Where can we buy your beautiful earrings
¿Cuál es el rango de precios? ¿Dónde podemos comprar tus hermosos aretes?
MN: They start at $7 and prices vary depending on the complexity of the design and the amount of material required to make them. Clients can order through Instagram or Facebook, and I either deliver on campus (UPRM or UPRRP) or send them through regular mail. My sister also delivers them in Bayamon.
Comienzan en $7 y los precios varían según la complejidad del diseño y la cantidad de material requerido para hacerlos. Los clientes pueden realizar pedidos a través de Instagram o Facebook, y yo entrego en el campus (UPRM o UPRRP) o los envío por correo ordinario. Mi hermana también los entrega en Bayamón.
HCUPR: How long does your stock usually last?
¿Cuánto dura generalmente tu stock?
MN: I work in small batches of each design, so they usually fly off the table. This is why I rotate my designs pretty often when selling at craft fairs.
