Some More Tips to Reduce Your Ecological Footprint

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

Saving our planet sometimes sounds like it’s the work of a superhero and alienates us from what we could do. Well, you know what? We can all be the heroes of the story. Every day that passes we can do small things that lead to big results. Here is a list of things you could do to save Planet Earth:

1. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth

Many of us have the bad habit of letting the water run while we brush our teeth. If we aren’t actively using the water, , it is important to close it since you can save up to  four gallons per minute  and 200 gallons per week! Now that’s a huge change.

2. Skip the straw

Ok, let’s admit, many times we prefer to use a straw to ingest our drink instead of taking it directly from the container, but at the same time we know that these are made of plastics that are very harmful to our environment. However, if you really feel like you need to use straws, you have options that aren’t using a straw and throwing it away every single time. You can get a  portable and reusable straw made of bamboo. These bamboo straws  will prevent you from using excess plastic. The best option would be not to use them since the plastic of these takes 200 years to biodegrade and also affects the fauna that eats it innocently.

3. Turn off the tap while you shower

Some of us tend to take more time washing and untangling our hair or shaving in the shower and we can forget and let the water run.To shower in less than 5 minutes could save up to 1000 gallons of waters per family in a month. Think about it the next time you’re in the shower, turn off the tap and turn it on again only when necessary.

4. Take your own trash bag to the beach .

When you leave jangueo with the corillo, take a garbage bag so that everyone throws all their waste and prevent it from reaching the sea. If you see someone else leaving trash, take initiative and pick it up. It’s not yours but if everyone thought like that, the world would be even messier than it already is.

5. Start recycling at home

Find the recycling center closest to your home and collect all the recyclable products you use in your home. Take trips from time to time to the center with everything you have accumulated from recyclable materials and you will be reducing your generation of garbage thereby reducing waste that affects our planet.

6. Prepare a home garden

Plant everything that catches your attention. They can be medicinal, aromatic, species, fruits, vegetables or even flowers! Making our surroundings greener helps the environment, wildlife and us in many ways. Call your friends or family and invite them into this green experience. 7. Attend cleaning of green areas

Orient yourself and keep an eye open for opportunities to do eco-friendly activities near you.

8. Take the clothes you’re going to throw away to fiber recycling stations

There are several stations of these around the island, do a bit of research online and discover where you can leave your clothes. It is also important that you determine if the clothes you are going to throw away are in good condition because if they are you can take them to goodwill centers and so someone else can make use of what you do not need.

9. Rethink your transportation methods

When it comes to driving to places, first analyze how far away the destination is. You can use the bicycle to reach nearby places and walk to those that are even closer. You can agree with someone who takes the same route as you to go together and thus avoid polluting the environment.

10. Supports the sale of recycled products

In stores when you are shopping choose to buy products that are made of recycled materials. Avoid producing more garbage if you have the opportunity, small things like these make big changes.
