With fall in full swing, we want themed food, comfy clothing, and inspiration for Halloween costumes. For the longest time, I’ve considered October to be the middle child of fall, September being the biggest sibling, and November and December being, rightfully so, the spoiled youngest ones. October just has one day and, even though there are Halloween movie countdowns on TV, among other traditions, this holiday could be celebrated in many other ways. In November, for example, friendsgiving has a big grip on friend groups because of the bonding it creates with people we call family. I propose this wholesome tradition be added to this year’s Halloween plans and start Friendsween. A special date of spooky fun!

For me, October is all about Halloween parties, and eating lots of candies that later give me terrible stomach aches. This month is mostly made up of private/individual time until those last few days of scrunch time where I have to create the perfect costume. For example, my friend group has always dreamed of being the Charlie’s Angels, fighting crime on Halloween night. So, why not finally do it this year? I have the perfect plan to make it happen and an even more fun activity all in one! Personally, my friends are a fundamental part of my carefully calculated social interaction time. Catching up with them while doing something different, like painting canvases or playing trivia games, is always something I look forward to. My suggestion for any friend group that’s trying new things this season is to use the spooky and fall theme and run with it. Which is why I’ll be giving you different ideas of activities you can do with your friends this October!

Dress Code and Cooking

Let me paint you a picture of the different steps you need to take in order to create this spooky Friendsween activity. First, the wardrobe can be whatever you want it to be: from sweatpants to an all-out, detailed costume. Personally, comfy clothing with fuzzy socks is the way to go because it could also be stained if things get too crafty. The next category is food, which could be anything TikTok or Pinterest related that you’d be excited for. The possible list of recipes could include pizzas in the shape of a ghost or a pumpkin, with individual toppings that create beautiful or scary faces. Crazy shaped cookies or triple stacked brownies with cookie dough, brownie mix, and orange Oreos are also easy to bake, just like the viral fall slutty brownies. If your date is inviting drinks, you can even decorate your signature cocktail with cotton candy, simulating spider webs, or dye it red to give it a bloody appearance. Lastly, any pumpkin tasting treat is absolutely on theme! And pumpkin carving parties should be in this mix of Halloween fun.

Decorating

Decorating can also be the perfect bonding experience. Not only is it very aesthetically pleasing, but you can potentially even pack it up and upcycle it for Thanksgiving. It’s the scary awesome gift that keeps on giving! Orange, black, white, purple, and brown decorations, with autumn leaves and miniature skeletons can surround your area of spooky creations. Don’t forget the cinnamon and pumpkin candles too!

Costume Planning

Another idea for a fun Halloween activity is to plan a night out for choosing a joint or solo Halloween costume. And, considering student budgets, you can even plan to DIY it together. It’s clear to me that there’s always going to be that one friend in a relationship that might be adjusting the holiday to their couple’s costumes, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be part of this Halloween-spooky-cute-seasonally-fall fun though!

There are endless possibilities of activities that make October a friends-oriented holiday, and not just an Instagram picture one (although posting your costumes on your IG stories will never not be a Halloween staple). What’s most important is telling your close knit group what you want, why you want to bond, and make it happen! That is my version of a Friendsgiving, one that anyone can plan in their own way. I just set a potential manual for a holiday that just has not been explored to its fullest spooky capacity. Pick a day, a place, and invite your group or your partners in crime, just like my own Charlie’s Angels! Bye Charlies, and remember to take new chances on this spooky October.

María Isabel is an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus and a contributor to the Her Campus UPR chapter magazine. Her topics of interest range from entertainment to midnight thoughts that keep you up at night. She is majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities faculty with a specific interest in Theater and Language. She is academically eager to keep taking French classes, and learn more on the relationship between theater, movement, and performing arts. Another discipline they would major in, if they could, is in Art History and Literature. Most of their work experience is related to theater as a member of the cast and production team in the Theatre committee at her university. Maria is constantly looking for new opportunities to participate in theater productions and art related projects. In her free time she relaxes by reading, watching Netflix and Disney Plus movies and series, and looking for new experiences to share with her friends. When she’s not listening to podcasts on her drive to the university, she is binge watching her favorite sitcom,New Girl, and she feels that most times she is a mix of Jess and Winston, and when stressed a raging Schmidt.
