Movie Monday: What to Watch this Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

With university having started and the effects of Hurricane María still being with us, our level of stress may be a little over the roof these days. That’s why it’s good to sometimes unwind and try to forget some of our daily troubles. One of the best ways to forget about our lives and to dive into other realities is watching movies! There are a great variety of movies to watch in theaters from dramas to whodunits to action-packed superhero movies. Here are some of my favorite selections to see this weekend. Bonus points if you manage to watch them in theaters!

1. Blade Runner 2049

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, go right now! See it before it’s taken out of theaters! It really is an experience. It transports you into a whole other world thanks to its stunning visuals and its amazing musical score. Like the original movie, it has a slow pace that invites introspection.  Fortunately, you don’t need to see the first film to see this one. Blade Runner 2049 takes place thirty years after the first film.In this film, the protagonist is K, a new blade runner and LAPD Officer who discovers a secret that could potentially throw society into war.The story goes beyond the surface by questioning what it means to be human. (Also: who doesn’t enjoy looking at Ryan Gosling under neon lights for two hours?)

2.  Kingsman: The Golden Circle

The Kingsman sequel is another movie that has been in theaters for a while now. This movie is just plain fun. It’s rare for a sequel to be as good as the first one, and this is a sample of that fantastic anomaly. The fight scenes are super entertaining, and the jokes are really funny. This film’s premise goes: the Kingsman spy organization sees itself joining forces with another secret organization in the US to defeat a shared enemy. If you want to have a good time, this is the movie to watch.

3.  Wonder

This movie is based on the New York Times Bestseller children’s book by R.J. Palacio. The movie is about August Pullman, a boy coping with facial disfigurement who is also starting fifth grade. His facial differences had prevented him from attending a mainstream school– until now. At an age where kids struggle with compassion and acceptance, Auggie has to convince his classmates that he’s just like them. This movie promises to inspire and touch everyone’s hearts.

4.  Murder on the Orient Express

This is the fourth adaptation of the murder mystery novel by Agatha Christie. It tells the story of detective Hercule Poirot who travels on the lavish Orient Express until it’s stopped in its tracks by a snowstorm leaving a dozen passengers stranded. After midnight, Samuel Ratchett is murdered and the detective must solve the mystery before the killer strikes again. This movie is star-packed with actors like Penelope Cruz, Daisy Ridley, Leslie Odom Jr., and much more. Crime fans should definitely go all aboard on this one. If you love suspense and drama you’ll want to get a seat to see this movie.

5. Justice League

This highly anticipated DC saga takes place months after the events of Batman vs. Superman. Inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne solicits the help of Diana Prince to recruit a team. Together they form the Justice League. This team consists of Wonder Woman and Batman plus new on-screen heroes, such as The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg who joining together to fight against a new threat to mankind.

Hopefully, you find the movie you’re looking for here. Now, go grab some popcorn, meet some friends, and enjoy yourself for a couple of hours. Happy movie watching!
