Where there are countless masterpieces, there are also not so great pieces. However, beauty can be found in everything.

The Room is considered to be the worst film in history. It’s from the year 2003 and was written, produced, directed and starred in by Tommy Wiseau. The man wears every hat that is required to make a movie, or in this case an attempt to make one. The Room was his passion project and he did everything to make sure that this film was made and released for the entire world to enjoy. Wiseau was right about one thing: the entire world did enjoy his passion project.

The premise is simple. It’s a drama, but it should be classified as a comedy. It follows a man named Johnny who’s engaged to a woman named Lisa. The movie shows how their lives fall apart. We get two of the most disturbing and stupid characters ever in the form of Denny and Mark. That’s all you need to know.

The film is terrible in every aspect: acting, directing, plot and writing. It also has terrible green screen effects which is unbelievable because the green screen is used to create the backdrop of a city which is not hard to do at all!

Don’t even get me started on the dialogue. The film has some of the most memorable lines ever and they’re delivered in the most horrible way possible which makes them even more memorable. You’ve probably heard them and didn’t know that they were from this heavily panned film. The most popular one and my personal favorite is:

“YOU ARE TEARING ME APART LISA!”

– Johnny (Tommy Wiseau)

Read it in the most exaggerated way possible: throw a chair against the wall; break a window; scream the line, and that’s how it was delivered in the film. It’s beautiful.

The best actor in the entire film is a pug that appears for 1 minute and 30 seconds of the film. He steals the show but the moment is tied with Wiseau’s delivery of another classic line. The entire scene involving the pug is cinematic gold.

While there are certainly a lot of terrible things to say about this film, it’s not completely bad. It has its good moments. The terrible acting makes for comedic moments even at times when you should not be laughing at what’s happening. It’s a horrendous masterpiece, as a close friend of mine likes to call it.

If there’s one thing that anyone who watches The Room can get out of it is that they can follow their dreams. They can do whatever they want as long as they put themselves out there and have the motivation to do it. It’s the perfect film for aspiring filmmakers since it could motivate them to continue their passion and they won’t feel like a failure. If Tommy Wiseau did it, anyone can do it.

This year a movie that’s been generating critical acclaim from various film festivals around the world will premiere. It’s called The Disaster Artist and it’s about the making of The Room. I have never been so excited for a movie since Twilight (2008). Ever. It’s happening and I can’t fully express how excited I am to watch it. It’s been generating Oscar buzz and I can’t even fathom how Tommy Wiseau will react if The Disaster Artist were to win an Academy Award. We’ll see come December and you’ll definitely get a review.

Despite it all, The Room is definitely worth checking out. We all have guilty pleasures and there’s not a single doubt in my mind that The Room is one of them. We all need to feel better about ourselves once in awhile and this is the best movie to watch for it. After the first time you experience it, go ahead and pick up a pen and write the next big thing. Anything is possible. The best way to watch it is with a group of friends, and tons of snacks and drinks. It’s an experience every film lover must have.
