Listening To The Poor: MedLife UPRRP

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

What is MedLife?

MedLife is an organization that partners with low-income communities in Latin America to improve their access to education, medicine and communitiy development initiatives. Their mission is to help families achieve greater freedom from the constraints of poverty, empowering them to live healthier lives. This organization achieves their mission through volunteer trips, student empowerment and the MEDLIFE project fund.

The MedLife Fund: 100% of donations and fundraising are used toward the creation of medical clinics, schools and other development projects to promote access to basic necessities and skills encouraging poor individuals and families to free themselves from the constraints of poverty and promote a cycle of health, education and personal development. MedLife believes that in order to improve the overall health and welfare of families and communities in need, a comprehensive approach is needed. With this goal in mind, they seek to deliver aid through three broad avenues: Medicine, Education, and Development.

MedLife UPRRP

The mission of the MedLife UPRRP student chapter is to raise awareness, encourage people to take action against poverty and organize activities for fundraising. The group focuses on promoting local community service and providing practical help to those in need. MedLife UPRRP counts with the essential support of 80 motivated undergraduate students from all faculties (Ciencias Naturales, Humanidades, Ciencias Sociales, Educación, Administración de Empresas, etc.)

Join The Cause

Student volunteers are recruited to participate from the Mobile Clinics, which take place in Peru or Ecuador. Mobile Clinics deliver primary care services to individuals and families who otherwise lack access, and the students who get involved have the opportunity of traveling to Peru or Ecuador for 1-2 weeks to do community service.

Other Ways To Give

The UPRRP chapter hosts and participates in various fundraising events to benefit the MedLife organization. These events are delivered by exceptionally commited and hard-working students! This past December, MedLife UPRRP did a partnership with the Ronald McDonald Foundation and Walmart to give life-changing presents for the homeless and the less fortunate.

Fundraisers

The team has ramped up their fundraising efforts during the past few weeks holding a pizza day, a bake sale, a movie night, Maggie Moose: Scoop for a Cause, and a public health forum @ Clínica Salus. To optimize the fundraising performance, the president of MedLife UPRRP, Camila Fernández is always on the lookout for new valuable team members. Want to get involved? Contact: medlifeuprrp@gmail.com
