Lingerie: An Empowering Approach To Self-Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

There’s something said about starting the day wearing a comfy, sexy piece of lingerie. Be it a classic push-up bra, a lacy thong, or your barely-there bralette; there’s no denying the inherent je ne sais quoi from adorning my body with quality undergarments, however diverse that underwear may be. Are you in the mood for some boy shorts? Perhaps sexy with a few straps? How about delicate and femme with some “pretty in pink”? Whatever the reason, beyond the dated social stigma of lingerie being exclusively sexual or decorative, the true meaning of modern lingerie transcends sex in the long run.

Lingerie is intimate-but in a whole ‘nother sense of the word. Your underwear preferences are really all about wearing what makes you feel comfortable, sensual, beautiful, and worthy of love. I like to call this “self-intimacy,” in other words, the relationship you have with your body.

What is self-intimacy?

This concept includes the perception we have over our bodies (aka body image), our self-esteem, and, of course, our likes and dislikes over our clothing choices. There are plenty of resources online for a more in-depth explanation of self intimacy and why it’s such an important step to take for us to love ourselves better :).

Everyone should go through a self-intimacy journey. It’s up to you to discover what makes you feel your best self inside and out. Keeping that in mind, lingerie is just another way to show your body how much you love and appreciate it.

Let’s not forget that a proper lingerie garment can also work wonders as an uplifting pick-me-up. Besides making us feel fierce and empowered, occasionally treating yourself (by investing in quality bras, panties, teddies, bodysuits, and any other type of lingerie that goes right up your alley) is sure to make you feel good and cared for.

It’s all about you…

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it’s easy to fall victim to the idea that lingerie is exclusively meant to be seen (i.e., by your partner). The main issue with this cliche is that not everyone is actually in a relationship, or even desires to be in one. And that, dear reader, is a-ok! Yes, having someone else admire your lingerie can be thrilling and empowering by itself (as long as there is consent by the person wearing it, of course). Still, how about we challenged the notion that lingerie is just another form of eye candy, and thought what it would be like if our underclothes are actually closely-coveted secrets? Something so special, intimate, and sacred to us that it literally makes us feel radiant, whether other people know it or not. After all, the love story that’s bound to take place between your body and your lingerie is your business and nobody else’s!

Whether or not you’ve started using lingerie as an intimacy exercise, as outerwear, or as whatever you want, I have a few brand recommendations. My faves are Savage X Fenty, Bare Necessities, Aerie, Bluebella, and Adore Me. My journey with lingeries has been a great way to practice some personal TLC. I can only tell you it’s literally one of the best decisions to make in terms of self care and love! These brands are trendy, affordable, and inclusive brands that are taking over the underwear market.
