Holiday Flashback: Bad Bunny Becomes Good Bunny

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

During the holiday season in Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny became a trending topic on the island. He did so by creating his own charitable organization and releasing his debut album within the same week. It is because of these combined events that Bad Bunny has created such a significant impact on both cultural and social aspects in Puerto Rico during December of 2018.

Bad Bunny’s impact on the holiday season began once he founded the organization Good Bunny. The purpose of this organization was to grant Christmas to disadvantaged children across the island, and he successfully did so on Sunday, December 23rd. The event that the artist later called La Nueva Tradición took place in the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in which Bad Bunny gave away 5,000 christmas presents. When asked about his inspiration for the event, he directed himself towards local newspaper El Nuevo Día stating that “It’s a blessing to be able to achieve a dream and to make other people happy. There are days when I wake up with no motivation, I go on stage with no motivation, and then I go on and see people’s reactions. They’re so happy to be there and to see me. That changes my mood, it gives me energy and happiness because this is what I was born for; to make other people happy.”. The activity undoubtedly revealed the artist’s selflessness and appreciation towards his fanbase.

With the same motivation that Bad Bunny hosted La Nueva Tradición, he also announced the release of his debut album x100pre. He announced through social media that the album would be available for fans on Christmas Eve. Fans anxiously waited until midnight to listen to the album and they were not disappointed with the outcome.

x100pre consists of 15 songs and collaborations with artists such as Drake, Diplo, and El Alfa. Throughout the album, Bad Bunny combines trap with other music genres such as bachata and pop rock.  These combinations were so original and innovative that many fans have classified Bad Bunny’s work as indie-trap. Awe struck among fans throughout social media because of the artist’s uncanny and groundbreaking work on x100pre, which immediately became a success.

It is unquestionable to admit that Bad Bunny did not disappoint fans during this holiday season. After a year of releasing bops, accomplishing amazing collaborations and overall being a prideful representation of Puerto Rican youth, Bad Bunny could not have ended 2018 in a better way. Benito, as locals prefer to affectionately call the artist, has turned himself into a new and innovative concept; latin trap sensation, ocasional fashion icon, and philanthropist.
