Five Netflix Series to Watch During This Trimester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

Congratulations! You survived the longest semester in the history of all semesters at the UPRRP! Unfortunately, classes have started again. Sometimes to escape from this reality we resort to watching Netflix, to ease our minds off the multiple college related task we have to embark.

Taking in consideration the short amount of leisure time we will have during our hectic semester, we’ve made a list of top quality Netflix shows that won’t require much of your time to get invested in!

1. Everything Sucks

Packed with nineties memorabilia and the perfect capture of High School awkwardness with a dash of embarrassment comes Everything Sucks. This coming of age story, narrated through the lives of our main protagonists Luke and Kate, explores subjects of sexuality, bullying, struggles inside the family such as being single parents, and the complexity of building one’s identity. With a killer soundtrack, including (yes, it’s necessary to point this out) ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis and its quirky characters, this series of ten episodes (30 minutes each) will have you laughing and enjoying yourself in no time.

2. The End of the F**king World

If you haven’t seen this series by now, I have no idea what you are waiting for. The End of the F**king World took the world by storm since it’s release on January 5th of this year. The courageous and witty way this series attacks subjects like consent, sexuality and ace-sexuality, childhood trauma and family issues is both admirably incredible and completely hilarious for those who have a very specific sense of humor (as I have). Its vintage aesthetic is “to die for” (pun not intended) and cinematographically it has viewing pleasure. Eight episodes of 25 minutes won’t be enough for you: believe me, when I say, it will leave you wanting more.

3. Anne with an E

If you are looking for something heartwarming with beautiful settings, Anne with an E is for you! This series is good for watching it with your family, younger siblings, loved ones and even with your grandma! But, also by yourself. Based on the literary classic ‘Anne of Green Gables’ by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne with an E strikes home with the lovely re-telling of the coming of age story of Anne, an orphan girl in the nineteenth century and her journey through a new life while trying to heal from the trauma of her past. And, if the seven episodes of an hour each aren’t enough for you, don’t fright! Season two is on its way to production that already began in November.

4. One Day at a Time

One Day at a Time is a series I feel everyone should take time, sit down and watch. It’s refreshing, new, and filled with political commentary, addressing the various struggles that latinx immigrants and their next generation live through in the United States. You will find yourself “binge-watching” this series that keeps promising laughter, tears and new issues to address with each episode. You may even find yourself identifying to the characters and situations that are presented in this series! And, if you need more convincing, Rita Moreno stars in it! Is there anything more to say?

5. GLOW

These Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling will hook you until the last episode. The story follows along with our curious and almost unsympathetic main character Ruth’s journey of unemployment and being in search of her big dream; this will lead her to join a rather unusual team. With a very diverse cast, this comedy addresses stereotypes and daily women’s struggles. Its witty storytelling will leave you speechless, and it will also have you clicking quickly to watch the next episode. It’s truly a shame how quickly those ten episodes fly by.

Hope this list helps you find your new obsession and a good way to spend your well-deserved breaks between studies!
