This week at Her Campus UPR, we’re delving into creepy stories, urban legends, and just chilling stories from all over! We’re getting you ready for Halloween. ;)

There are numerous myths and legends that surround us and the places that we live in. Here in Puerto Rico, we’ve got La Llorona, La Luz Eterna, El Chupacabra, and most recently La Gargola.

However, Puerto Rico isn’t the only place that has its own share of creepy legends. There are plenty of bone chilling and frightening in other countries. In the United States, there have been plenty of encounters with what is known as the “black-eyed children”. According to numerous encounters, they are beings that have the form of children and they walk around with hoods covering their faces. At first glance, you only notice their incredibly pale skin. However, once they remove the hood, you notice their soulless and hollow black eyes that are the cause of their namesake. There have been plenty of encounters, but the most notable one happened in 1996.

Journalist Brian Bethel was sitting in his car in a parking lot writing a check when two children approached his car and knocked on his window. Bethel looked and was taken aback by the appearance of the children because he was quick to notice the distinctive black eyes. He lowered his window a bit just so he could hear the children. They demanded that Bethel let them into their car so that he could give them a ride to the movies. Bethel recalled that he had never felt so frightened. A feeling told him not to unlock his car and let them in. However, he felt as if his hand was automatically reaching to unlock his car on his own free will. It felt as if he were in a trance. He snapped out of it, despite the children still insisting and drove away. When he looked in his rearview mirror, there was no sign of them.

Bethel states that he was incredibly lucky at the fact that he managed to escape, but that he fears for people that were not as lucky, those who gave in and let the children in. There have been no accounts of what happens after, but be assured that those people never made it out alive.

Another notable encounter is with a woman named Sara. She was alone in her home when there was a knock on the door. She went to check who it was and there were two children matching the appearance of those seen by Bethel. In this case, the children were demanding that Sara let them into her home so that they could use the phone to call their mother. She recalled that they started crying in a synchronized fashion so that she would take pity on them and give in. Sara managed to control herself and did not let them in, but she hasn’t been able to sleep well since then.

No one knows what happens if you let them in, but as mentioned before, there is probably a guarantee that you don’t make it out alive. Other people suspect that the children are actually members of the Unseelie Court, a secret world that exists beneath our in which creatures known as Fae reside. Fae is powerful creatures that have a human-like appearance, their most distinctive feature being their pointed ears. They are known to be ruthless and consider themselves to be the superior species, it’s speculated that the black-eyed children are Fae that is assigned to come to our world with the sole purpose of kidnapping humans that are turned into slaves forced to serve the Fae for all of eternity. It’s also suspected that the children merely turn the victims into one of their own, forced to live out eternity that way and to hunt down more victims.

In the end, no one knows the truth and all we can do is that if you were ever to encounter these children, do NOT let them inside and give in to their demands.
