50’s Fashion Highlight: Tea-Length Swing Dress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

Look, let me start by saying that I don’t have a problem with dresses… except I do. Every time I’m in the market for a new dress, they’re either too short or too tight. If they fit on top, they’re loose on the waist and vice-versa. Yes, there are plenty of people who love dresses and they look spectacular in them. But I prefer the freedom of movement. That’s something that tight, short dresses don’t give me. And! They’re likely to expose my butt which does not help my case. That’s why I’m so happy that tea-length swing dresses are making their comeback! Even though the 1950s were filled with chaos, they got something right apart from music: these dresses.

They highlight your body shape.

The tea-length dress is created to accentuate your waist. It does so by being tight in the upper area and then blending out into a flowy A-line cut. You can’t help but feel fabulous while wearing this! They’ll elevate your mood and your style. If you are short and don’t feel confident with the length, remember that there is nothing that a pair of heels can’t make work (or platform combat boots!). And even if you don’t use heels with it, the size of your body shouldn’t dictate what you like to wear. All that matters is that you feel comfortable and beautiful in it.

One word: C L A S S Y.

I’m going to make a petition that when you look up the word “classy” in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of one of these dresses because they’re classy AF. Something about swing dresses make you feel elegant and regal. Maybe it’s because of their sociohistoric connotation or maybe it’s just that dresses with even remotely full skirts are wondrous and reminiscent of royalty. I swear that when I wear one I feel like a princess: flowy and majestic.

However, these dresses are versatile. If you own one in a neutral color, they can help you to feel business ready. Like some historical queens, you can feel powerful and commanding. Pair them up with cute accessories like a chain-strap crossbody purse and a nice pair of heels and you’re ready to ready to take over the world. If the cute aesthetic isn’t your thing, swing dresses also look great when used with contrasting accessories in dark colors (think combat boots, loose unkempt hair and dark makeup).

They’re fun!

These dresses come in all types of colors and prints! Want something full color and serious go for it! But if you want something with fun prints? They come like that too! Want to revive the 50’s? Sure why not! Buying them is fun when you have such a wide variety. Do you know what else is fun? Twirling in them! They will go all flowy around you and you won’t want to stop! Also if you don’t want to get dizzy, walking in them is awesome. With every move, the dress moves dramatically. It’s also fun to thrift for these. Since they’re a common vintage piece, you cand find some in very inexpensive prices and good conditions.

The vintage factor.

Vintage is the trend. From typewriters to clothes to dresses to kitchen wear, past trends are making a serious comeback. Nothing screams vintage like a tea-length swing dress. You will feel like a 50’s movie star with them. Of course, be careful of not standing over an air vent or your dress will defy gravity and go up!

The 50’s tea-length swing dresses are live! Go get one and show it around! Thrift for these or buy one, you’ll def have a lot of fun with it.
