Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, I started noticing how people were experimenting more with their clothing and documenting their outfits on Instagram and TikTok. People started mixing colors, using statement pieces, and wearing funky accessories. These people made me realize that great outfits don’t have to wait for special occasions, and that looking like the main character can be an everyday thing. That’s why I want to talk about ways to channel main character energy through your clothes.

1. Colors, colors and more colors

Clothes are a big part of our forms of self expression. Keeping that in mind, it’s safe to say that colors have become the new black. In the streets, we see anything from monochromatic neutral-toned looks to endless mix and match-type combinations of colors that bring attention to the wearer. You can slowly create your own color palette. Something that might help you is figuring out which colors go best with your skin’s undertone. I’m not saying you have to only use the colors that match your skin tone; however, knowing which colors go best will help you look better. If you’re not completely comfortable with colors, maybe try incorporating just a bit into your makeup, accessories or shoes; and you can add on a little more over time. Not only can you use the same colors to create monochromatic looks or add a pop of color, but you can also mix and match your colors. You can use a pink shirt and purple pants, or a blue dress and green accessories. When it comes to color matching, your best friend is the color wheel

2. Bold pants

Pants are often underestimated, and most people don’t go bolder than ripped jeans. But why settle for a basic pair of jeans when you can look fashionable from head to toe? Whether it be colorful, printed, or any type of quirky bottoms, bold pants will surely capture many stares. If you’re not feeling like going bold on top, something unique on the bottom is the way to go. I know that wearing noticeable pants can be a little scary, buttry adding some color and embroidery first, and later incorporate patterns and cutouts. I’m sure that, once you get the hang of it, you’ll never want to go back.

3. Fun shoes

Shoes aren’t usually the focal point of an outfit because people tend to use them out of need instead of fashion. However, using them to make a fashion statement is an outstanding way to change an outfit completely. Shoes can either make or break an outfit, as they can dress it up or dress it down. In this age of fashion, you can find any type of shoe to match your main character aesthetic. Want some fur? You can get it. Want shoes that can make you stomp through life? There are options. Chunky platforms? Hundreds. So, honestly … don’t think about shoes as something you have to wear just because you can’t walk around barefoot. Have some fun with it!

4. Play with textures

Sometimes, wearing things with the same texture can be boring. What’s special about a pair of jeans, a cotton t-shirt and a cotton hoodie over it? Combining textures is a different way of making an outfit look less basic. Even if all components of the outfit are the same color, mixing textures will make it look more elevated. There are countless combinations to tryーyou can mix leather and satin, or lace with cotton. Don’t let the fear of an unknown combo stop you from trying it out.

5. Accessorize

I’m a huge believer that maximalism is the way to go for the main character vibe. I like looks with hundreds of necklaces and rings. Some people might think that it’s extravagant, but honestly? Why wait to wear the things you love when you can wear them everyday? Throwing all the items together is about having fun and showcasing your individuality. You can also mix and match textures, layer pieces, or accessorize your look with unusual items, such as garter belts

I might be presenting you with some options to look like a main character, but remember that this is more of a mindset. You don’t have to follow these tips to the T.  Trends come and go, and no matter what everyone else says, you should wear what makes you happy.
