You’re sitting in your dorm awkwardly with your new roommate after only being dropped off hours ago by mom and dad. You can’t believe you’re here. You’ve made it this far. You’ve worked so hard, and now finally you’re in the place you always wanted to be. So far behind are the days of your high school accomplishments like prom, homecoming, and the memorable clubs you joined. Now, it’s time to experience a different sense of excellence . Welcome to college!

UNT does an amazing job at making you feel at home, and all throughout your undergraduate career, you’re going to be well taken care of in any department and field. Still, being new to a campus with so much to offer, can throw you out of a loop that would otherwise benefit you.

Here’s a UNT Survival Guide for the Freshman Go-Getter:

RULE #1.) ITS THE SIMPLE THINGS….

Sit in the front of your class, introduce yourself to your professor, turn your phone off during study sessions, READ YOUR SYLLABUS, all that good stuff. You’ve heard it all before, COMMIT TO IT.

RULE #2.) DONT OVER INVOLVE YOURSELF

It’s so easy to get caught up in the loop of clubs and organizations that you can’t fully commit to because you have a million things on top of your academics. DON’T join more than three clubs at the time. Fourth time is NOT the charm. Here’s some great advice: Join a club that’s geared toward your future career, join one that’s for your secret passions, and join one thats out of your comfort zone so you can learn from it. Words from the wise.

#3.) THE 3RD OR 4TH FLOOR OF THE LIBRARY IS STUDY HEAVEN

It’s so quiet up there. Don’t even yawn, because then you’re being too loud. Matter fact, don’t even breath.

RULE #4.) FINESSE YOUR TEXTBOOKS

College is a business, and this method to milk us all dry is enough to make anybody want to cry in a library corner all semester. AMAZON & Chegg are your best friends. Our UNT Barnes and Nobles Book Store price matches as well.

RULE #5.) UTILIZE THE WRITING AND MATH LABS

As a freshman, you’re going to have those prerequisite classes like English and Math that can bite you in the butt if you fall behind. UNT offers writing and math labs with tutors who can help you study.

RULE #6.) THE BEST TIMES TO BEAT THE UNION RUSH

Between 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Union is most full. If you’re trying to get to the food lines early with your flex, or get a great seating area in the syndicate, you’re going to have to avoid all the 9:50, 10:50, 11:50, 12:50, etc times, because a lot of classes get out during those times.

RULE #7.) STAY HEALTHY!

Everyone knows about the Rec Center on campus, but do you know we have a Health and Wellness Center as well? There, they can definitely help you create a diet plan to manage your nutritional needs. Noodles are apart of the college experience, but it is possible to be healthy in college. You can check out the Health and Wellness Center in Chestnut Hall on the 2nd floor.

RULE #8.) GET CHECKED OUT.

Going along with Rule #3, in Chestnut Hall, there’s also doctors’ offices in Chestnut Hall. Making doctor’s appointments aren’t that hard, I swear, and if you’re ever feeling sick stop by the doctor there! They even have a convinent pharmacy whenever you’re prescribed medicine.

RULE #9.) THE MONEY MANAGEMENT CENTER CAN HELP

Any person can be down on their luck sometimes; Especially, if mommy and daddy are back home. The UNT Money Management Center is a great way to bounce back during any struggle to make sure you have everything you need money wise. They offer tons of short term small loans to get you through a tough day, week, or few weeks. Keep in mind you’ll always have to pay them back though.

This is a lot….BUT HAVE FUN! YOU’RE WELCOME! WELCOME TO UNT!
