Together We Soar- Meet SGA Candidates Michael Luecke and Cameron Combs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Voting starts today for UNT’s SGA next President and Vice President team, and Michael Luecke and Cameron Combs are looking for your support in this election. This past week, I had the opportunity to speak to Luecke, who is running for SGA President, and discuss what they can do for the student body. Here is everything you need to know about Leucke and Combs’ campaign.

Why do y’all want to run for SGA President and Vice President?

Students on our campus have a lot of amazing and unique plans to improve on our campus for all; they only need people who will be able to listen to them and help them implement the change that they want to see. Students need leaders who are going to be willing to fight for them, and what they need in order to be happy and successful in their everyday lives. Cameron and I want to be that voice for them. We want to serve you, the student body, to help our University SOAR to new heights.

How will you build upon what the current President and Vice President have started?

The current administration has done a great job serving and supporting the student body, but Cameron and I would like to focus on issues that we feel like will better help UNT students and the future of our University. With that being said, one of our platform points does stem from the Kara/Thomas Administration of 2018-2019. The initiative that we would like to refocus on and implement on our campus again would be the Tampon and Pad Initiative. This initiative gives all students free access to important hygiene supplies within the UNT restrooms.

What are you hoping to change if y’all are elected?

If given the opportunity to serve as President and Vice President of the Student Body, Cameron and I plan to Synergize our campus, Outreach to our entire community, Assure that student voices are heard, and Redefine who we are as a student body. We plan to do this by focusing on key issues that have been affecting our student body, such as reforming parking and transportation, working with UNT Dining in order to increase dining services offered to students, as well as working with UNT Library Services in order to increase the selection of textbooks offered to students utilization. These are just a few of the initiatives we plan on implementing.

How can UNT improve on Diversity and Inclusion on campus?

The concept of Diversity has already been achieved on our campus. Now the real task is going to make sure that we are inclusive of all students, people groups, and communities on our campus. We want to make sure that we are when trying to achieve the concept of inclusivity that is not forced, but intentional.

Why did y’all choose “Together We Soar” as a campaign Slogan?

We chose “Together We Soar” as our campaign for a few reasons. First, we feel as though it encompasses what our entire platform is trying to get across. We want to Synergize our campus, Outreach to our entire community, Assure that student voices are heard, and Redefine who we are as student body. Another reason is that we believe that if we have the support of the student body, staff, and faculty that we Weill truly be able to SOAR.

What sets you two apart from the competition?

One thing that I feel like separates our ticket from the rest is the experience we have, as well as the diversity of the student population that we have both represented. Cameron and I have both been in multiple experiences where we have been pushed to make tough decisions, and by making these tough decisions, it has more than enough equipped us with the skills necessary to run the Student Government Association. Cameron and I are so excited to have the opportunity to be your next Student Body President and Vice President!
