It’s that time of the year where graduates are taking pictures in their robes all over campus, tests are piling up, and free time comes to a halt. It’s the end of spring semester, and although you are grateful to soon be done with all the stress of school, you become saddened with the realization that you will be on your own for the summer. Unless you stay in an apartment close to campus, you are most likely going back home to the parents. This means no more 2 am adventures with your college buddies, freedom to be a lazy slug all day, or the self expression of your outfit choices without critique from your family.
College is a hectic place, full of memories and difficulties that eventually form who we are. It is a time of exploration and dedication. Everything you do is your choice and what you do with your life is all based on the simple decisions we make everyday. Adults and children envy us for we are in the playground of life even though it may not always feel like it. Going home for the summer means that lifestyle is put on pause until the fall semester.
Sure you can occupy your time by working a summer job, or having an internship. But those high school friends haven’t lived with you through this year. It isn’t the same as having your best friends from college who have been with you through the stories you want to tell. Connections soon dissipate and the hometown you once lived in is now just a temporary shelter.
I never want to forget the nights spent staying up late and talking with friends in my dorm. I never want to forget getting meals with people in the cafeteria and complaining about the food and the repetitive music they play. I never want to forget about cramming for tests in Willis library, skipping class to go shopping, or making weird videos with friends when we get bored.
College can be the best time of your life and summer at home really makes you appreciate it.
