With spooky season coming to a close, I’m sure everyone is looking for something new to watch since scary movies and Disney Halloween Classics are played out. It is time for you to broaden your horizons. Netflix is the place to go for the best original shows and movies. I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite ones I think you should give a try whenever you need a break from studying or when you’re looking for something new to binge watch with your roommate!

  1. Atypical: I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW. Every single thing about it. I started the show last month and finished in two weeks, and boy was I missing out. Atypical follows Sam Gardner, a boy who is on the autism spectrum, and his family through their daily life. You see the ups and downs of their family life and how Sam being on the spectrum affects everything that they do. Think of any coming of age movie or show that you’ve watched in the past, but ten times better. I can guarantee you’ll find yourself laughing or crying at this show every episode. If you’re looking for drama and comedy, this is definitely the show for you. There are two seasons of this show currently.

  2. Insatiable: Despite all the backlash this show received, I still gave it a chance, and it is a hot mess. The best way to do describe this show is absolutely crazy. With each episode, you have no idea what you’re going to get or what’s coming next. This show follows an overweight teen that becomes skinny and tries to become a beauty pageant star with the help of a civil lawyer/beauty pageant coach. Insatiable is drama left and right, so if that’s what you love, give it a try. This show currently has one season.

  3. On My Block: On My Block is by far one of my favorite shows of all time. The show follows the lives of four inner city kids that live in South Central Los Angeles. They battle growing up, saving their close friend from a gang, cracking the code to what seems like an impossible case and friends turning into lovers. I fell in love with these characters from the first episode, and honestly felt like I was growing up with them. This another one to make you laugh and cry. There is only one season, but the second season is in production right now!

  4. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before: I’m obsessed with this movie. I have watched it a total of 20 times since it came out this August. This movie follows Lara Jean, a hopeless romantic who writes love letters to all the boys she has ever loved. The letters get leaked and Lara Jean’s world turns into chaos. This movie is based off of the trilogy written by Jenny Han. This is such s super cute love story, and I’ve heard rumors that there’s a second one in the works!

  5. Set It Up: I have an evident obsession with romantic comedies. What can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic, and this movie feeds right into that. The premise of the movie is basically two assistants set up their really terrible bosses in hopes of making their lives easier, but like all romantic comedies, that’s not what happens. I’m sure you’ve seen something like this before because it is such a played out plot, but there are some twists and turns that make the movie great. This one gets two big thumbs up from me.

  6. Irreplaceable You: Get ready to bust out the Kleenex because this one is for sure a tearjerker. This movie is about a couple that have been together since they were 8 years old, and when one of them gets cancer, they navigate life with only a few months left with each other. I vividly remember basically crying through the whole thing, and not really knowing how to go about my day after watching it. With that being said, it is a must watch if you’re a sucker for sad movies and really cute love stories.

Netflix has a reputation for putting out such good original shows like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black, but don’t overlook the ones that don’t create as much buzz. I could recommend Netflix Originals for hours and hours, but I decided to only give you a few of my favorites. Don’t be afraid to branch out on Netflix because you never know what you’ll come across.
