Movies to Lift Your Mood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

This week has been unspeakably difficult. For so many people, the stress of the election cycle combined with how hard it is just to be a person has become overwhelming. Before you can get back on your feet to fight the good fight, it’s important that you take care of yourself emotionally. The films listed below are available on Netflix and are guaranteed to both lift your spirits and inspire you.

1. 10 Things I Hate About You

This movie, a delightfully weird late 90’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, is a go-to mood booster. Kat, played by Julia Stiles, will fuel your angry feminist inner monologue and Patrick, played by a long-haired Heath Ledger, will turn your heart into melty chocolate fondue.

2. Queen Mimi

This bittersweet documentary about an elderly woman who captured the hearts of celebrities and Santa Monica laundromat patrons alike sheds light on the complexity of humanity. We’re all flawed and beautiful and strange in our own ways, and that should make us hopeful.

3. Begin Again

The all-star cast, gorgeous visuals, and why-didn’t-I-think-of-that plot make this movie the perfect thing to watch when you’re feeling blue. It capitalizes on the best aspects of a romantic comedy and a musical without the obnoxious parts of either.

4. Big Eyes

Tim Burton dramas may not give you the same fuzzy feelings that a romantic comedy might, but they sure are distracting. Let this eerie film take you into another world and inspire you to fight for what you deserve.

5. The Fundamentals of Caring

This movie takes an idea that could be utterly heartbreaking and turns it into one filled with adventure, true friendship, and twisted humor. Watch this one when you’re looking for hope in unfortunate circumstances.

Above all else, collegiettes, take care of yourselves and keep on truckin’.

Maddie is in her third year of existential woe at the University of North Texas. When she's not in the library, you will probably catch her painting, listening to cute acoustic music, dismantling the patriarchy, or trying to practice good self care. On a good day, she's doing all of them at once.
Orooj Syed is a senior at the University of North Texas, majoring in Biology and minoring in Criminal Justice. Between balancing her academics and extracurricular activities, she enjoys finding new places to travel and new foods to eat. Writing has always been one of her greatest passions and, next to sleeping, she considers it a form of free therapy.
