Alejandra Balbuena, also know as ‘BB,’ is the type of person you can always count on—and many people at UNT do. BB is the the Public Relations Coordinator for not only Her Campus, but also FOLXLORICO and the Latinx-Hispanic Student Union, and is the Social Media Coordinator for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Needless to say, she is putting in work to pursue a degree in PR, and honestly, I’m not sure how we’d all survive without her.
What inspired you to run for a leadership position at UNT?
I wanted to make a difference on campus and I tried to get positions in organizations where I felt that the focus was on issues or on projects that I knew would change people’s perspectives.
How has being in Her Campus changed your college experience?
Her Campus allowed me to flourish in a group of women that was unapologetically supportive and loud. I was able to form bonds with some of the girls that will last a lifetime.
What challenges have you faced as a leader, and what did you do to overcome them?
As a leader, you have to be assertive without seeming rude, especially as a woman. So making sure I get my point across to everyone forcefully but in the best way possible is important to me.
Who is your biggest influence and why?
I would say my biggest influence is my mother, Carlota. (a living legend tbh) She is so powerful and has always taught me what it is to be a strong woman. I cannot sing her praises enough, I do not deserve her nor does the world.
What advice would you give freshmen year you if you had the chance?
Not everyone has to like you, as long as you love yourself, screw the haters!!!
What is one goal you plan on achieving this year?
I want to travel a lot more this year. There is so much of the world that I haven’t seen yet and I deserve cute pictures in Europe!!!
Do you think it is possible for women to achieve their dreams with competing against like-minded women?
I absolutely think it’s possible! I feel like competition can be healthy, which I say as a competitive person. But honestly, as long as women keep a community amongst themselves, then anything can be possible.
What are three words that describe you?
Ambitious, responsible, and fantastic.
How would you like to be remembered?
As a PR Pro but also that I had a family that loved me and that I stood for things that mattered.
What in your life has brought or given you the greatest fulfillment?
Seeing my parents be proud of me and being supportive is what makes me feel fulfilled.
