The Inspiration Behind Cardi B’s 2019 GRAMMY Look

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

The 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards aired Sunday night on February 10, 2019. Viewers were excited to cheer on their favs and stans everywhere couldn’t wait to see who would go home with gold. But if you’re like me, I wasn’t interested too interested in who won this year; I was excited for the LEWKS (looks). I wanted to see which celebs would wow me and which would disappoint. I’m always excited to see who will take risks and most importantly how will they execute. This year Cardi B turned heads without a doubt.  Cardi B always brings an exciting look to the red carpet but this GRAMMYs look was like nothing else she had done before.

After gawking over Cardi’s ensemble I wanted to know more about it: who styled her, what was their inspiration, who designed the garments etc. So, I started on Instagram there I learned that her stylist is an incredible visionary named Kollin Carter, Cardi’s personal stylist and entrepreneur. For the GRAMMYs Cardi and her team wanted something unique and jaw dropping; she really wanted to give a look that would shock all and make fashion lovers squeal. As a lover of fashion when it comes to red carpet looks, I love to dig deep and uncover what story is being told behind the garments.

Kollin flew to Paris to view the Archives at Mugler’s fashion house to find the perfect looks for Cardi. Kollin with the help of staff at chose three looks from Mugler’s Fall 1995 Couture Show. The garment that she wore for the red carpet was so restricting that Cardi could not sit down in it. The skirt fits tight and blossoms at the hip complementing Cardi’s curvy silhouette. The garments had to be adjusted to Cardi’s measurements including extending the gloves to make room for her long nails. Cardi’s glam squad aimed to replicate the original look down to the hair.

The second look was the white gown draped with fringe at the sleeves. Kollin specifically chose this outfit for her acceptance speech look. This gown was Mugler Archive from his Spring 1997 show. The final look was her performance outfit; another archival look from Mugler’s Fall 1995 Couture Show. Cardi is known to be very provocative, especially on stage, so this look had to be outrageous and, of course, sexy. Kollin selected a black transparent bodysuit with leopard print and crystal detailing across her chest and stomach. The bodysuit was paired with a black leopard fan-like attachment.
