Every Scary Movie You MUST See This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

If you are anything like me, you live for a good horror movie, and are constantly searching for any and all that arent cliche or overdone. Here is a list of all the movies that I am personally looking forward to watching this year!

The Prodigy: February 8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC4cyYRxjFk)

Starring Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) and Jackson Robert Scott (It), this star-studded cast may leave some parents questioning their parenting choices. With a serial-killer plat twist that will leave the audience shook, this movie will leave everyone that watches it questioning everything, and everyone, they know.

Greta: March 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAEoJkL_8zU)

Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, this movie follows Frances McCullen, who is still grieving her mothers death. After finding a bag belonging to Greta Hideg, Frances decides to return it. Drawn to Greta’s maternal charm, Frances is taken under her wing, only to later discover that Greta isn’t who she says she is.

Us: March 22 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNCmb-4oXJA)

Us stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, who both also starred in Marvel’s Black Panther last year. It was written and directed by Jordan Peele, who was critically acclaimed for 2017’s ‘Get Out.’ This movies follows the Wilson’s as they take a vacation to the beach, but find much more than the are expecting when they encounter a family that looks exactly like them. I don’t know about you, but the trailer itself is terrifying.

Pet Sematary: April 5 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VllcgXSIJkE)

Based on Stephen King’s book of the same name and a remake of the 1989 film, this film is for sure to make you take a second look at your own pets. It follows the Creed family, who move into a house with a pet graveyard in the woods behind it, and the mysterious encounters that follow suit. Remember, sometimes dead is better, especially in this case.

The Curse of La Llorona: April 19 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOV-xMYQ7sk)

La Llorona, AKA the Weeping Woman, is a Latin American folklore about a woman who lost her children, and searches for others lost children to make them her own. This version follows Anna Garcia, who La Llorona has latched herself to in order to take her children. Anna recruits a priest to help fight off the evil, and save her children before La Llorona claims them.

Ma: May 31 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIvbEC8N3cA

If you love psychological horror films, or even just Octavia Spencer (The Help, Hidden Figures), this movie is for you. It follows a group of teens who befriend a lonely woman, dubbed ‘Ma’ after she buys them alcohol, and then allows them to party at her house. As Ma’s house becomes the usual hang out spot, things begin the unravel, and they discover the dark truth about Ma.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: August 9 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4siB4ScfzZ4)

Based off of the book series of the same name, we will get to see a few of our favorite scary stories brought to the big screen. My parents grew up with these books, and passed them on to me, so I am definitely ready to relive my childhood nightmares in the best way possible.

It: Chapter 2: September 6 (No Official Trailer yet)

After the success of the 2017 remake of Stephen King’s It, we are expecting the sequel two years later. It will follow a new cast, as the children have grown up, but the kids we’ve grown to love will make an appearance. Set 27 years after the last movie, the Loser Club returns to fight off the creature once and for all.
