DIY Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Mother’s Day is coming up in two weeks and our mothers deserve the world. However, for a broke college student that can be quite a challenge. So I put together five of my favorite DIY’s that would be a perfect and easy mother’s day gift.

#1 HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUB

Homemade sugar scrubs are so cute because you can customize what ingredients you use depending on your skin type. A sugar scrub is the perfect natural exfoliant.

Some of the materials you need include:

  • Sugar
  • Coconut oil
  • Essential oil of any scent
  • Cute jar

So you put a cup of sugar and ½ a cup of coconut oil and a couple drops of your favorite essential oil and put it all in a cute jar.

#2 EARRING HOLDER

My mom actually has one of these and she made one for my grandmother as well. It is a very easy and cute way to display your jewelry and have it organized at the same time.  You can customize the color and fabrics you use.

Some of the materials you will need include:

  • Old Frame
  • Chicken wire, or lace ribbon
  • Fabric

Basically you can repaint the frame any color you want, then you staple the chicken wire behind the frame and then you can put the fabric of your choosing on the back part of the frame to add a pop of color. Then just hook all your earing onto the chicken wire.

#3 MAGNETIC MAKEUP BOARD

A magnetic board is very convenient because it lays all of the makeup in front of you. Again this is a cute way to show off your makeup and have it put away very neatly as well. This is also very easy to customize and take away all the digging in a makeup bag looking for the perfect eyeshadow away.

Some of the materials you will need include:

  • Cookie sheet
  • Frame
  • Fabric
  • Magnets

For this you will need to get a cookie sheet and cover it in a fabric of your choosing. Then put a frame over it for a cute extra touch. Then after that all you would need to do is glue magnets to the back of her makeup and stick them on the board.

#4 LETTER PHOTO COLLAGE

A letter photo collage is a cute way to show off the selfies between you and your mom and is also very personalized to her by having her initial be the base of the photos.

Some of the materials you will need include:

  • Photos
  • Letter of your moms name
  • Modpodge glue
  • Brush

For this all you will need is the letter of your moms name whether it is the first letter of her first name or her last. Then get pictures of both of you and cut the photos to fit the letter and glue it on there with the modpodge.

#5 SCRAPBOOK OF RECREATED VS OLD PICTURES

This is just a very cute and personal gift that your mom is sure to love. Its great to reminence on the old times and having a recreated photo right next to it is a funny way to show how much you have grown.

Some of the materials you will need include:

  • Scrapbook
  • Camera
  • Old photographs

For this you will need to dig through old photos and pick some of your favorites. Then try to recreate the picture as best as you can including location, clothing, and hair. After you recreate the pictures put it next to the old one in a scrapbook for your mom.
