5 Ways to Make Yourself Relax

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Along with the busy weeks in the life of a stressful college student, there are moments where you start to mentally panic, and freak yourself out – especially when you have a demanding major with demanding classes and professors. During these moments, you need to find ways to relax and unwind, or else you will be at risk of spiraling out of control, and literally explode.

Listen to Music:

“Music on, world off.”  Music is a powerful force, and can actually take you away from the world and the problems that come along with just living. Whenever you are stressed, try listening to old nostalgic songs that give you the feels, make you sing loudly, and dance around.

Journal:

There’s something about the feeling of pressing a pen onto paper. Whenever you feel stressed or frustrated, pour your thoughts and feelings into a journal to relieve some tension. However, there are times when you need to focus your energy on the positive things in life, so I suggest that you have two separate journals, one for happy thoughts and memories, and one to jump dump out all the built up negative energy.

Binge Watch:

Binge watching favorite TV shows, movies, YouTubers, etc. is a go-to-way to relax. There is nothing better than engrossing your time into someone else’s life – whether it’s a real person or a character.

Working Out:

Working out is a healthy way to relieve stress. You should take a kickboxing class, run outside, or dance to your favorite songs to relieve your stress. It’s also fun to workout, or go to a fitness class with a small group of friends who support you, and bring positive vibes.

Hanging out with Friends:

“Misery loves company.” There are times where you need to hang out with friends and just be goofy and silly together. Go out to eat, play around, sing karaoke, or go shopping together. Regardless what you do, being around friends who feel your pain and empathize with your frustrations helps to cope with your stress.

Of course everyone is different, and there are other unique ways to relax, but how you relax doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that you are relaxing, and unwinding whenever you are pent up. You may not get a chance to hang out with your friends; however, in between stressful moments, you should do something like listen to music, or binge watch to give yourself a break.
