Making Strides of Lincoln

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

On a warm sunny day, October 26, 2014, over three thousand survivors and supporters gathered together for an important cause, to fight breast cancer. One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. This walk was to raise awareness about how serious this matter is, while still being able to enjoy the positive energy and feel the support from each other at the walk. In total, $170,00 were raised which will be utilized to provide more research, provide free comprehensive programs, and support those affected by breast cancer.

The walk was located at Holmes Lake Park on South 70th Street, Lincoln, NE. It was a non-competitive 3-mile walk and anyone was welcome to join a team or walk individually. Walkers talked with their friends and around every corner, walkers were greeted by a group of cheerleaders from different high schools around Lincoln. To keep people more motivated, water bottles were served half way through the walk. Once everyone had cross the finish line, walkers were able to enjoy live music and were given snacks.

The Making Strides of Lincoln did an amazing job with organizing this event and in providing different activities for everyone to enjoy with their loved ones. The location was very welcoming, peaceful, and easy to find. Although the walk would have still proceeded if it had rained, it was the perfect day for a time to connect with our environment and our friends and family. It was an amazing experience and personally, my team cannot wait to participate next year!
