How to Make the Most of Your Summer Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.
  1. Get a job! I’m so excited to be working in an emergency vet clinic this summer. Getting a job or an internship in the field that you want to go into gives you invaluable experience, a killer thing to add to your resume, and can help solidify your choice of major if you are on the fence or thinking about switching.
  2. Work out!  The summer is the easiest time to keep yourself up and active because the weather is perfect for outdoor activities. From bike riding, to running, to pick-up games, to kayaking, there’s always plenty to do that will get you up off the couch and enjoying the nice, fresh air. Just make sure to drink plenty of water!
  3. Purge your room! With all of your belongings home from college and all of your stuff under one roof, now is the perfect time to take a careful look through all of those clothes stuffed at the back of your closet, books from middle school on your bookshelf, and magazines from when you were in high school. Toss the old and unneeded, recycle what can be reused, and donate the rest! Places like Plato’s Closet, Goodwill, and the Salvation Army are always looking for items that are in good condition.
  4. Take an online class! Get some of those pesky gen eds out of the way like art history, finance, or even communications. An online class is the perfect workload to keep you productive and moving towards a degree while still being able to have a relaxing break.
  5. Volunteer! Places like your local humane society, food kitchen, and many other nonprofit organizations are probably looking for volunteers now that school is out and they don’t have as many groups of students coming in. Not only will you meet new people and learn new things, but giving back to your community is always a great feeling.
