This year’s Super Bowl was full of winners and losers. No, I’m not talking about the football players, or even Beyonce, but rather the advertisers. As an advertising major, my favorite part about the Super Bowl (and the only reason I even tuned into the game) is the commercials. This year a few really stood out, many were mediocre, and a few fell flat. Here’s my picks for best and worst Super Bowl 2013 ads.
Top 3:
#1: Dodge Ram “So God Made a Farmer.” Maybe it’s just the Nebraska girl or FFA member deep inside me, but this commercial was the best by far. The storyline showed how hard it is to be a farmer, something that a lot of people never think about or realize. This advertisement also showed that Dodge knows its target audience better than anyone else who advertised tonight.
#2: Audi “Prom.” So much buzz about this commercial! The Audi ad definitely had a good message – Audi makes you feel young, brave, invincible. I’ve watched the commercial a good dozen times and I still love it.
#3: Budweiser “Brotherhood.” Everyone loves the Clydesdales – especially baby Clydesdales! This ad tugged at the heartstrings and led to tears from a few. The brotherhood message was a good idea for the company, as alcohol often brings people together.
Worst 3:
#1: Wonderful Pistachio “Psy Get Crackin.’” As if we haven’t heard enough Gangnam Style in the past couple of months, we got to hear it during the Super Bowl, too! As with most of the worst commercials, there was no strong message and it was boring to watch. They relied too much on Gangnam Style to help them be successful, and it did not work out.
#2: Go Daddy “The Kiss.” One word: Awkward. While the ad did get everyone talking – GoDaddy was trending on Twitter all night – it was just not something anyone really cared to watch.
#3: Beck’s Sapphire “No Diggity.” I’m not sure about anyone else, but I think singing fish should be kept in Finding Nemo, and out of the Super Bowl. The fish brought nothing to the advertisement. The commercial also lacked the excitement and emotion that Super Bowl commercials often have.
