The word is “Pinterest”. One simple word that has changed what we mindlessly stare at on the internet. It’s the new site we go to when we want to put off our homework or when we are bored and can’t fall asleep. If you haven’t already had the chance to check out this site, we recommend you put it on your “to-do” list. This site has once been described as the “Facebook with just photos” and, more accurately, “addictive”. Once you start, it’s hard to stop! So, what is Pinterest exactly and why has it become such a wide-spread phenomena on college campuses everywhere?

“Pinterest is a virtual pin board where you can keep track of the things you like. They have categories for everything from food to teaching ideas, said Raven Snyder, a junior early childhood education major.

Pinterest has become an outlet for people to discover new creative ideas and unique items you wouldn’t even think to Google. People have used it to help plan their weddings, keep track of food recipes, and even to help with their school work.

“I like seeing new ideas and finding blogs and websites that are useful to different projects I am working on, said Leah DeVries, a junior interior design major.

To work Pinterest, you simply make an account, browse the thousands of photos already pinned and “re-pin” them to your own boards. You can also “follow” your friends and see what they pin.  With a concept so simple, it’s hard to believe how it has caught on like a wildfire.

“I love it because it gives me new ways to dress, fun recipes and interesting ideas for parties. I could spend all day looking at the creative ideas on Pinterest!” said Megan Considine, a senior business marketing major.

People from all over have fallen in love; maybe it’s time you do too! Check it out for yourself HERE!

Here are just some of the pictures you’ll see on the site:

Lottie is a junior at the University of Northern Iowa and she is a communications major with a journalism minor. She has always had a passion for fashion and writing, so she figured, why not combine them? She was a writer for Her Campus only one semester before becoming the Editor-in-chief and campus correspondent for fall of 2011. Lottie is very excited to take on the challenge and to make great things happen with Her Campus magazine.
