DIY Halloween Costumes 2011

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNI chapter.

It’s that time of the year again. As Halloween approaches us, many start to think about what to dress up as. Instead of buying a pricey costume from a retail store, make it yourself! Yes, it could be time consuming and you might have to get creative, but it will definitely be worth it in the end. Here are some fun and inexpensive ideas for DIY costumes:

1. Ke$ha– Bring out your inner rock star by putting together an outfit inspired
by the ‘sleazy’ girl herself.  All youneed is to rip some things up and shower yourself in glitter!

What you’ll need:

Clothing:
– Ripped up pair of fishnet tights or leggings
– Short skirt, spandex, or once again ripped shorts – Ke$ha likes to show it off
– Cut off shirt, you can rip an old t-shirt if you don’t have one
– Anything animal print will do the trick
– Leather jacket if you have one

Accessories:
– As many feathers you can get on you – you can buy feather earrings or put a bunch in your hair
– Put on all the bracelets you own
– Combat boots are Ka$ha’s signature look, but if you don’t have those try some high-top sneakers
– Fresh pair of shades – Ke$ha likes to wear the ones that you can’t see out of
– Nose ring – If you don’t already have your nose pierced, you could buy a fake one. Ke$ha only wears rings, not studs
– GLITTER

Hair & Makeup:
– Try not to wash your hair the night before
– Twist certain sections into spirals and braids and then sleep on it overnight
– Loosely curl the rest, then give it a tease to mess it up
– Start with a smokey eye and dark eyeliner
– Put as much glitter makeup you own on your face – eyes, cheeks, and lips

2. Grapes – If you’re stretched for time, this is a simple and easy resolution to your problem.

All you’ll need is a friend or group of friends, and balloons.
– Start by blowing up all of the balloons. You’ll want to get green and purple to represent grapes.
–  The final step is to attach the balloons to whatever you’re wearing.

Watch out for sharp edges!

3. Painter

What you’ll need:
– White shirt
– White pants
– White hat
– Paint brush/roller
– Paint – make sure to get more than 1 color for creativity.

All you have to do is put on your white clothes and splatter the paint all over you.

4. Cereal Killer

What you’ll need:
– Cereal boxes
– Black clothing
– Plastic knives and spoons
– Ketchup

People may not understand at first, but after you tell them what you are they will get a good laugh out of it. Dress in black clothing to resembling the killer part of the costume. Attach cereal boxes to you. I would suggest using the miniature cereal boxes. Poke the plastic knives and spoons into the cereal boxes. Smear ketchup on your clothing and the cereal boxes. You could also glue cereal to your clothing.

5. School Girl/Nerd

This is always an easy go-to costume for the undecided.

What you’ll need:
– Big glasses, with tape in the middle of course
– Checkered skirt
– Button down or Polo shirt
– Ruler or books to carry around
– Long white tube socks
– Low-high heels
– Red lipstick

Braid your hair into pigtails to make the look come together. If you choose the button down shirt with a pocket, don’t forget your pocket calculator!

She has always had a passion for fashion and writing, so she figured, why not combine them? She was a writer for Her Campus only one semester before becoming the Editor-in-chief and campus correspondent for fall of 2011. Lottie is very excited to take on the challenge and to make great things happen with Her Campus magazine.
