Your Guide to Lisbon

Updated Published
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

A year ago I was studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain. While being there, I was lucky enough to travel to many beautiful countries where I got to experience their culture and what that country had to offer. Lisbon, Portugal was one of my favorite trips. Here are my recommendations if you’re ever visiting!

Hostel

  • The Lost Inn
    • My friends and I stayed at The Lost Inn Hostel while we were in Lisbon and I couldn’t recommend it enough. We had a larger group and we were able to all stay in one room which was very convenient. It was a great location. We were very close to every restaurant, shop, and attraction that we wanted to see. We all felt very safe and the rooms/bathrooms were always kept clean.

Attractions/Tourist Spots

  • Doca da Caldeirinha
    • This was a fun plaza to walk around with beautiful sights!
  • Arco da Rua Augusta
    • This was the famous arch and plaza area near the water. It was a super pretty area and a great environment for tourists looking for shops and restaurants.
  • Castelo de S. Jorge
    • We didn’t go inside the castle because we didn’t want to spend the extra money. It was definitely a hike up to this area, but there are good restaurants, shops, and more here. There are also lots of hidden look out points if you walk around!
  • Jardim Botanical
    • It is very inexpensive to get in if you bring your student ID and super peaceful to walk around here! Lots of local wildlife.
  • Belem Tower
    • If you’re going to do one thing in Lisbon, do this! The tower was in a stunning area right near the water. There were bubbles, music, food, and more. It was a 10/10 and my favorite thing that we did while in the city!

Restaurants

  • Zenith Brunch
  • My friends and I went to this restaurant in Madrid! It’s a chain in Europe and definitely touristy, but reliable if you want a filling breakfast.
  • Nadia’s and Friends
    • This restaurant had pastries near Castelo de S. Jorge. Portugal is known for their pastel de nata. In my opinion these pastries are a must try!
  • Time Out Market
    • This restaurant reminded me of a food court. There are lots of different options and it’s a really fun atmosphere. There are long tables so it’s fun to go with friends. Definitely get there early though as it gets very busy.
  • Dear Breakfast
    • We went here on our last morning for breakfast and it was SO good and SO cute. I would definitely recommend it. They also have outdoor seating which is always a plus.
  • Veramente
    • This restaurant was in a really good location when we needed something quick to eat. They had really good pizza and it was on a cute street!
  • Opica
    • This restaurant had average food that was a little expensive, but the atmosphere was really fun which made it worth it and they were able to accommodate our large group.
