With all the food temptations around campus and in the dining halls it is important to include daily exercise into your routine. Working out helps you stay fit and healthy, and you also feel great about yourself once you’ve completed some type of exercise. One person’s way of staying fit can be completely different then someone else’s, so it’s important to try something that fits into your schedule and that you enjoy!

I personally love taking a good 1-2 mile run around campus. This time of year is perfect because the weather is gorgeous and it’s enjoyable to be outside.

If running outside in front of your peers isn’t your thing then definitely check out the gym at the Whittemore Center, there is something there for every type of person. You can hop on a treadmill, elliptical, or bike, and then tone the rest of your muscles with the variety of machines that the gym holds. There is also an indoor track, basketball courts, and racquet ball courts for fun ways to stay active. With the gym though, try to be there on off hours so you don’t run into huge crowds. Early mornings or late in the evenings have worked best for me.

If hitting the pavement or the gym does not seem appealing at all then definitely check out the many classes in the Whittemore Center that the campus recreation department offers.  You can partake in classes from yoga, Pilates, kick-boxing, and boot camp to Zumba, cycling, and belly dancing. These classes are great to do with your friends. They are fun and you can really feel the burn!

If you’re just starting to exercise, take it slow and gradually build up a routine that works well for your lifestyle. Walk to all your classes instead of driving or taking the bus, take a bike ride, go rollerblading, just get out there and be active! You’ll feel your best and your body will thank you for it.
