Why You Should Go on a Spring Break Road Trip

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Last year for spring break my friends and I got into my roommate’s Nissan Altima Friday night and drove to Tybee Island, Georgia. A few weeks before, we were debating on what we wanted to do for spring break. Our requirements were pretty much: fun, warm and cheap; really cheap. I had always wanted to do a road trip somewhere so I suggested it to my roommates and we agreed that it was a great idea.

One of the best parts of doing a road trip for spring break was how easy it was to plan. We decided on Tybee because it was warm, close enough to drive in a day, there was a beach, and the hotels were reasonably priced. After deciding the location, we just booked a hotel, which was really easy because it’s not a popular spring break destination. Other than that, we just had to plan whose car we were going to take and which route.

We left at 8 at night to drive 16 hours so we could drive throughout the night because we wanted to avoid traffic. We were stocked with a full car, snacks, and a good playlist. We switched off driving about every three hours and it didn’t really hit me how far we were going until about 3 a.m. when I was driving through Washington D.C. and everyone else was sleeping. But we finally got to Tybee at 1 in the afternoon the next day. We checked into the hotel, changed into our bathing suits and immediately hit the beach with some twisted teas.

Sadly, that was the only sunny day we had but we still had a blast on Tybee. We rode bikes around the island, visited the lighthouse, tried “chicken and waffles” and relaxed whenever we weren’t doing something. After Tybee Island, we went to Savannah for two nights. We spent the night in a hotel right by River Street, the street with most of the restaurants and bars. We visited Wormsloe Plantation and walked around Savannah and enjoyed the sun in Forsyth Park, one of the city’s 22 parks.

After we left Savannah we stopped in Charlestown, SC for the day on our way back home. From there we drove the rest of the way back, which didn’t go as smoothly as the way down. We had Wendy’s at 2 in the morning, we took more stops, we were all car sick and one of my roommates ran out of the car to throw up as soon as we got back to UNH. Even though the drive back was rough, that road trip with my best friends was a week-long adventure that is something we’ll always smile about.
