Where to Find the Best Food on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

We all know that little old Durham, NH doesn’t exactly have a lot of restaurant choices… but, if you go to the right place, and order the right thing, you are going to find out that the food on campus is better then you think. It is all about who to go to, what to get, when to get it, and most importantly, how much. Here are the top 10, in no specific order.

# 1
            Who: Franz’s Food
What: The JB. If you have not experienced the JB, you are in for a treat. The “JB” is two fried eggs, bacon, cheese, two fried hash browns and ketchup, all rolled into a flour tortilla. This delicious breakfast burrito will surely leave you feeling very satisfied.
When: This item is served on their regular menu and late-night menu. I recommend eating it first thing in the morning after a long night. The carbs to grease to protein ratio is the perfect combination to cure a rough hangover.
How much: $5.15, not including tax

# 2
            Who: Village Pizza
What: Steak and cheese sub with fries. First of all, before even getting to the steak and cheese, everyone should know that Village definitely has the best fries on campus. They are crisp and crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, and cooked to a golden brown perfection. The steak and cheese sub is awesome. Very filling, and the best part; it’s not too greasy.
When: Any time, but if you are feeling like you need to conserve money a little bit, Friday is the best day to go. On Friday’s you can get a small steak and cheese (WAY bigger then you would think), fries and a can of soda for only $6!
How much: sm. steak and cheese (no fries) $5 – lg. steak and cheese (no fries) $6 – sm. fries $2.25 – lg. fries $2.95. Friday special: $6 for a sm. steak and cheese with fries and a soda.

# 3
            Who: Mei Wei
What: Lunch Buffet. Yup, nothing better then an all you can eat buffet. It has everything from sweet and sour chicken, to lo mein, to egg rolls, to salad and ice cream. It is your typical Chinese food buffet, but for the price, you can’t beat it!
            When: Monday-Friday from 11-2:30pm
How much: $6.85, not including tax

#4
            Who: DHOP
What: DOLLAR…fifty slices! Even though we are all still upset about the price increase at DHOP, you can’t go wrong with an amazing slice of their pizza. The sauce is slightly sweet and the cheese is so good. I am more of a cheese only girl, but it is pizza, and basically anything tastes good on top of DHOP pizza.
When: These slices are definitely recommended to close out your night. DHOP is THE social scene after the bars close down around 1am. You can grab a good slice of pizza and find all your friends you lost through out the night.
How much: $1.50, if you go late night.

# 5
            Who: The Bagelry
What: The lasagna bagel. This is seriously heaven on a bagel. We all know and love Bagelry bagels, but if you have never tried the lasagna bagel, you must! This snack/meal has your choice of bagel with garlic & herb spread, tomato sauce & melted provolone. It tastes exactly like lasagna!
When: An awesome lunch item, any time of the week.
How much: $5.49, not including tax

# 6
Who: Freshens, in the Mub Food Court
What: Caribbean Craze. I know it is not exactly a food, but this smoothie is SO good, and I had to remind everyone that we do have some healthy options on campus. The Caribbean Craze smoothie has strawberries, bananas, a juice blend and one free booster (I recommend getting a boost of protein), and it is only 290 calories!
When: This makes for an awesome snack or maybe even a meal replacer if you are trying to lose a few pounds. Mub Food Court hours are Monday-Thursday 9am-6pm and Friday 9am-2pm.
How much: $3.99 for a regular size

# 7
            Who: Wildcat Pizza
What: Grilled chicken salad with creamy feta dressing. Yum, yum, yum. Really all their salads are good, but this one is the best. It is your basic salad, with moist grilled chicken on top. Make sure you get the creamy feta dressing; it is a favorite among many.
When: The salad is pretty big and filling, so I would recommend getting it for dinner over lunch.
How much: $6.10, not including tax

# 8
            Who: Pauly’s Pocket
What: Falafel Pocket. This may sound scary and different, but try it! Falafel is basically ground chickpeas (what is used to make hummus), fried into a ball. The falafel is then put into pita bread with hummus, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, and you can get it as spicy as you want! Take a step out of your comfort zone and try some international cuisine!
When: Perfect lunch item, and you might even have some left over for a snack later!
How much: $6.25, not including tax

# 9
            Who: Dominos Pizza
What: Small cheese pizza or small pepperoni pizza. I hate to mention another pizza deal, but I don’t think many people know about this late night special. We all love Dominos, and when you can get it for extra cheap, why not?! AND, they deliver…
When: After 10pm every day of the week, until they close. Obviously you can get pizza pretty much any time from them, but if you want the good deal, go after 10pm.
How much: $3.82 for a sm. cheese or pepperoni pizza, and $4.90 for a +1 topping pizza.

# 10
            Who: Wildcatessen
What: Chicken quesadilla. You wouldn’t expect it, but their quesadillas are great. They come stuffed with chicken, peppers, onions and a side of sour cream, guacamole and salsa. If you are feeling extra hungry, grab an overflowing side of waffle fries for $0.99!
When: These are seriously good for any time. Wildcatessen, also known as “Wild Kitty,” has extended their hours to: M-Wed 7:30am-1am / Th-Fri 7:30am-3am/ Sat 11am-3am & Sun 11am-1am. They even have express online ordering if you are in a rush.
How much: $5.99, not including tax
