Dating in college is anything but easy, especially when you’re typically focused on your school work instead of making money. However, you’re in luck! Here are a few date ideas around UNH to make your Valentine’s Day special!

1. Free Skate at the Whitt

You don’t even have to leave campus! It always feels like there is nothing to do in the winter months, and it is a pain to drag yourself out of bed. Instead of deciding that you are going to spend yet another day lying around inside your college dorm/apartment watching Netflix until your computer asks, “Are you still watching?” you could add some adventure to your day with your significant other or even your friends. Several times a week, the rink at the Whittemore Center is open for free skate and has dirt-cheap rental prices for a pair of skates.

2. Rye Beach

Believe it or not, Durham isn’t in the middle of nowhere, and there is plenty of beautiful scenery to be seen. Sometimes, you need to escape Durham, and trust me, I understand. Taking a ride to Rye Beach can bring you peace of mind. Taking a romantic stroll around the shore and listening to the sounds of the waves is more peaceful than you think. You could even switch it up and bring a picnic or a game to play if it’s warm enough and just enjoy each other’s company.

3. College Woods

This date idea costs no money at all. People may not think that a walk is considered a date, but I do! While yes, the winter can bring cold weather and not the most optimal walking conditions, you could still make it work. If you have a pair of snowshoes you could even bring them and make your walk in college woods more than an hour long.

4. Dinner and a Movie

Dinner and a movie may sound like an expensive date, but it doesn’t have to be. No matter where you live on campus, dorm or apartment, you have a kitchen. Yes, freshman… dorms do have communal kitchens that you are allowed to utilize. Swing by Hannafords and pick up a cheap easy dinner to make and skip the dining hall for one night, you deserve it! Then log into your parent’s Netflix account and watch a movie while you eat.

5.) Downtown Portsmouth, NH

Portsmouth can tend to be a bit pricy, however, you can definitely find ways around it. You don’t even need a car to get there, you could take the Wildcat transit that runs seven days a week! Just because you’re in Portsmouth doesn’t mean you have to buy a crazy expensive article of clothing or go to the fanciest restaurant you can find. You could go for a walk, have a cute photoshoot with your date, or even just sit down for a cup of coffee.

Hopefully these date ideas help you and your significant other have an amazing Valentine’s Day!
