Underrated Undergraduate Jobs: Babysitting

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Most college students are living on a minimal budget. A lot of students, like myself, work in the summer and save up money for the semester because it’s no secret that finding a job that works with your schedule can be hard. If you are lucky enough to get a job bartending on Main St. or waitressing at a fancy restaurant in Portsmouth – cherish it, because you found one of the few good jobs at UNH, even though you’re working harder then you have too.

There is a job that exists for collegiates that is not usually taken advantage of. The ironic thing is, you most likely had this job in high school. Babysitting!

This year I began babysitting for a family nearby school to make extra money since I had such an easy senior schedule. It turns out I was missing out on a job I should’ve had since I was a freshman.

Not only do I get to wear whatever I want to work, usually comfy clothes, but it’s fun! Since I babysit near the coast a usual day at work consists of after school pick up, followed by playing on the playground or possibly the beach, followed by homework, Wii and a snack. Tough day at the office to say the least.

Another perk is you don’t usually have to worry about working holidays! I was really lucky to babysit for one of my professors, so when I have a snow day so does she!

If you haven’t babysat in a while it’s not a big deal but resources go a long way with people hiring for a babysitter. Some families are more intense then others, but like any job you can look around to find out what best suits you. Some people are better with kids in grade school, some are better with multiple kids at once, whatever works for you. I babysit for nine year old twins (thats us in the picture!) and a 10 month old baby so there is never a dull moment! But that also makes time fly by!

Things have changed since we were in high school. Instead of your mom “pimping” you out to all your family friends you have to find other ways to find jobs. I recommend Care.com, Sittercity.com or the UNH employment website.

This job has no taxes, it’s easy and fun, and its flexible! Why would you want to get paid minimum wage at DHOP when you could make 16$ an hour playing?
