To Tweet or Not to Tweet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Twitter has hit the UNH campus ladies! Our school has their own twitter blog, so does TNH, and the UNH hockey team! Many sororities have also taken on the trend updating their followers on upcoming events and everything that’s going on! While it seems like a lot of people have created their own twitter worlds, some students still just don’t get it. That’s why we’ve laid out exactly who should have one and some guidelines on how to tweet!
Are you one of those people who update their Facebook status every few hours or know someone who does? Well that my friend is the perfect candidate for Twitter! Twitter allows people to update their whereabouts, thoughts, and news at all times of the day. While many people don’t have a life that is that interesting to constantly update everyone, you would be surprised as to how many things you do have to say! Some people chose to use their twitter just to follow their favorite celebrities. Justin Bieber is one of the top twittering celebrities, who gives his tween (and collegiate) fans updates and even tweets back at them! Twitter also allows you to follow athletes, your favorite magazines and even your favorite shows. If Justin Bieber doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are also newspapers that have Twitters like the New York Times will give you news updates faster than if you were to just watch the news.  An astronaut named T.J. Creamer actually ‘tweeted’ from the International Space Station last January. Twitter is helping connect people on a more personal level, allowing others to share what there doing, who there with, or what is on their mind at any point during the day.

Teach me how to Twitter, Te-Te-Teach me How to Twitter:

1. You have 140 characters or less to say everything you need to. It’s best to keep your ‘tweets’ short and sweet because nobody wants to read paragraph long tweets. Twitter is a small updating surface, not a novel.

2. Try to be witty. Just like Facebook you want more friends, on Twitter you want more people to ‘follow’ you. People will only follow you if you are giving them useful information, humorous blurbs, or share common interests. Nobody wants to read about when you have class or how you just ate a peanut butter and jelly.

3. Upload pictures or link in articles, this way it gives people more to see than just to read about. You know what they say a picture says a thousand words.

4. Try not to have long conversations on Twitter; it’s not like an IChat or Facebook instant messaging. But it is a place to say a little fun message to your friend who’s on Twitter, you can even tag them in it to just let them know your thinking of them. To tag someone in a tweet that your composing you do an “@” symbol and start typing their name. This will notify your friend that you just tweeted about them

5. Use #hashtags. Twitter is used all around the world; there are obviously some topics that people talk about more than others. They call these trending topics on Twitter that change every few hours. When the earthquake occurred in Haiti happened many people were discussing it via Twitter and celebrities were joining forces to help raise money. Also by adding hashtags you allow a common trending topic to occur and see what other people are saying about how Britney Spears’ new music video was a total fail or anything else. To use something in a hashtag you simply put a ‘#’ sign then type your hashtag without any spaces. Example would be #springbreak2011

6. Retweet others! If your friend just said something really funny that you think is so true or some celebrity breaking news just came up on your feed, retweet it allowing other people to see what you found out.

7. Have fun with it; on Twitter there really aren’t many rules. Make it interesting! I promise you once you start you won’t stop!

Happy Tweeting!
