Top 5 Closet Staples Every College Girl Should Own

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

“Lizzie McGuire you are an outfit repeater!”

Being a college student, let’s face it- you’re broke. What that means is you’ve got to cut corners in some areas of your life, but your style and wardrobe don’t have to suffer (psst it’s called outfit repeating!). By buying a few closet staples and combining them with the occasional statement piece here or there, you can make it look like you’ve got the wardrobe size of Blair Waldorf while not actually spiraling yourself into further debt.

Here are a few staples to keep in your closet to expand your wardrobe!

1. Doc Martens: This classic pair of boots is one of the best investment pieces to choose, as they are extremely versatile, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Although they are def not on the cheap side, they’re durable and you’ll get a lot of use out of them. You can get your pair Here. Below are a few ways you can style yours!

2. Plain white tee: Yeah, I know it’s basic, but I’m telling you the possibilities with a white tee are ~endless~. If you’re balling on a budget like me, then the white t-shirt is your new bff. You can layer it, pair it with denim, or even wear it underneath a dress! You’ll thank me later- get yours Here.

3. Fluffy teddy coat: This is a must-have for anyone going to school in the Northeast, plus it feels like a warm hug every time you put it on. Much like the white tee, this piece is super versatile. Pair this coat with sweats and a messy bun, or dress it up with nice jeans and booties. You can get an affordable (but just as effective) teddy coat right here.

4. Black leggings: I mean, c’mon, you had to see this one coming. Most girls I know (myself included) cannot live without their trusty black leggings, and I don’t know about you, but I practically live in mine. Get your pair right now while they’re on sale!

5. Graphic tees. Graphic tees can be thrifted, hand-me-downs, or store bought on a relatively low budget. You can customize graphic tees to fit your own personal style- whether it be casual with some Doc Martens or worn underneath a blazer, you can do a lot with graphic tees.

I hope these examples inspired you to mix and match these staples to expand your own closets. Always remember that it is in fact okay to be an outfit-repeater, but there is nothing worse than an outfit rememberer!
