Tips to Getting Through Final Exams

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

We all know that the last few weeks of school can be the most stressful of the year between final projects, term papers and final exams. Add a little spring fever into the mix and getting through finals may just be the hardest thing you’ll have to do all semester. Here’s some tips on how to stay focused and get through final exams.

Study ahead: A majority of us would prefer to procrastinate up until a couple days before when it comes to studying for final exams, however this is one of the worst ideas. Instead of cramming everything you’ve learned throughout the year days before your exam try reviewing material and notes for 30 minutes to an hour each day leading up to your exam. You’ll retain much more information oppossed to cramming in such a short time.

Hit up the library: Dorm rooms are full of distractions that can prevent you from studying, whether it’s your roommate chatting your ear off or friends popping in to say hi. The library is full of cubicles, quiet rooms and lounges where you’re guaranteed to get some quality studying in. If you find yourself in need of a little energy boost throughout studying, hit up Zeke’s for a granola bar and red bull flavor shot, blue raspberry and pomegrante mango are my favorites! And don’t forget the annual primal scream where you can yell as loud as you’d like to let off a little steam after a long night of hard work.

Don’t leave any questions unanswered: Ask your professors and TA’s questions, that’s what they’re there for. One-on-one help with your professor can make a crucial difference in your understanding of the material so attending office hours for extra help if needed not only shows your professor that you’re putting in the effort, but will benefit you in the long run when it comes to your exam.

Get some sleep: Most people think to do well on exams you have to be studying all hours of the day, but it’s important to get a good amount of sleep as well. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night is not only beneficial to your health but you’ll be more energized for studying the next day, plus nobody likes a grouch.

Take Breaks: Studying can be very overtaxing. Go grab some food with friends or just relax and give your brain a rest. Exercise is another great thing to do while on a study break. There’s nothing like some fresh air to wake you up and boost your energy.

A night out with friends: As Fergie would say, “A little party never killed nobody.” As finals are approaching and the school year is winding down make sure to make your last weekends count while still keeping on top of your school work of course. A night out with some friends is the perfect way to let loose and take your mind off exams even if it’s just for a night.

Follow these tips and you’re bound to ace those finals Wildcats!
