Steps I Am Taking to Become Zero Waste

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Lately, I have been seeing more and more of how the Earth is need of our help. Our planet is hurting and we are at fault. I decided to look into more of what I can do to help our Earth and become more zero waste. I am still learning and perfecting what I do. Any effort is a step forward and we all need to learn to do our own part. Here is what I have been doing, started doing and plan on doing! I hope this gives people ideas and the motivation to help out Mother Earth!

What I have already been doing:

  • I started eating with a vegetarian lifestyle!

The meat industry is taking a toll on the Earth as well as taking the lives of many animals.

  • I bring my reusable bags whenever I go shopping!

I always bring them when I go grocery shopping and I am working on bringing them when I go shopping! This way I do not need to gather single-use plastic bags. Not everyone is perfect and will forget if you have a collection of plastic bags, most grocery stores collect plastic bags to recycle!

  • I always bring my reusable water bottle with me everywhere we go!

There is no need for single-use plastic water bottles & it will save you money!

What I just started doing:

  • I just purchased metal straws!

I like to keep them in my backpack or purse to ensure I have them ready whenever I need them! I also clean them every night!

The ones I own: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CJH18FY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  • I have been making my own coffee at home and stopped buying from coffee shops

Not only did I stop using single-use plastic cups, but I have been saving money from stopping to stop by Dunkins!

What I use to make my coffee: https://www.pamperedchef.com/shop/Entertaining/Barware%7CGlassware/Cold+Brew+Pitcher/1568?gclid=Cj0KCQiA597fBRCzARIsAHWby0HMtEMTaiIJGdeAdVV1n9WRSyKegwRUqKMk3hYFvOmsa79JJWUYNpgaAnAuEALw_wcB

What I need to start doing:

  • I want to purchase bamboo toothbrushes!

I learned that our normal toothbrushes do not recycle and that bamboo toothbrushes are 100% recyclable!

The ones I plan on purchasing: https://www.amazon.com/Better-Earth-Company-Biodegradable-Compostable/dp/B07B6TKV4J/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1543034325&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=bamboo+toothbrush&psc=1

  • I want to purchase reusable produce bags!

I noticed how many single-use plastic bags I use buying produce at the grocery store and this will prevent that from happening!

The ones I plan on purchasing: https://www.amazon.com/purifyou-Reusable-Double-Stitched-Lightweight-See-Through/dp/B00XSHEJ90/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1543034393&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=reusable+produce+bags&psc=1

  • Look for more ways to create zero waste!

Reading articles and watching YouTube videos is my favorite ways to learn what I can do to do my part!
