Well, the Groundhog didn’t see his shadow. You know what that means: hours of day drinking at Young, T-Hall tanning and random beach trips are well on their way. The anticipation of these sacred college outings will undoubtedly stray our minds away from another important factor in the arrival of spring: spring clean-up.  Spring clean up is a time to refresh and rejuvenate our living quarters that have been worn in through our depressing winter blues. 2013 is the year to take a new approach to this old-school routine. Not only is it a time to clean out the cobwebs in your closet, but this is a great occasion to “spring clean up” your personal life and wellbeing with just a 5 changes in your daily routine. Here is how to do it:

1.)  Take the stairs!

You will be surprised how much this affects your body. After a week of forcing yourself to avoid the convenience of an elevator, I can guarantee you will not be out of breath the next time you surpass the treacherous hike up to your apartment.  A recent study found climbing five flights of stairs five times a week burns an average of 302 calories*. That’s the equivalent of a Turkey sub. Just do it!

2.)  Clean up the do

Winter causes most of us forget about taking care of our vitamin d-deprived locks. According to my hairdresser, your hair should receive a trimming every month. On a college-kid budget this can become impossible. This is why spring clean up is a perfect time to switch it up a bit! Getting a new haircut will not only improve your self-confidence but it will be a great transition to a new season with a fresh look.

3.)  Sweep out negative energy.

It is essential to your wellbeing to eliminate those who cause constant stress or negative vibes in your life.  Although this may be a difficult thing to accomplish, you will thank yourself in the end. By surrounding yourself with positive people and energy, you will start to take on these attitudes and behaviors. Clean out what is unnecessary, and keep those around who make you happy.

4) Throw out that winter diet!

Feeling flabby after the long, lazy winter months is standard, especially in the good ol’ granite state. Due to the weather and seasonal illnesses, it is easy to become attached to that easy, snowy day comfort food. All of this build up of carbohydrates can make you feel sluggish and tired. By adding low fat fruits and vegetables to two meals a day, you will begin to feel leaner and more energized, just in time for bathing suit weather!

5) Ditch the iPhone

We’ve all been there. You are hanging out with your friends and suddenly all realize you haven’t spoken a word because you are all engulfed in your social media bubble. Our obsession with our smart phones is something that is taking over our social lives. Whether you’re getting Scorpian bowls with your friends or just hanging out watching TV, try and shut it off for at least an hour. You will be surprised how much fun it is to be fully in the moment. These are the times you will remember. So, get off your phone and acknowledge those around you.
